DVD Recorder has died

My Sony DvD Recorder has died - it "Clicks" for a while then says: Error - return to Sony dealer.
It just won't start-up and gives no HDMI output - except the delayed Error-Message.

I'm guessing the HDD is at fault.... although it is in a safe-place and never dropped. I'm wondering if the OS is on the MBO = meaning the HDD is for Storage only..... I should replace it without too much fuss.???

Any Hints, suggestions? I might try to replace the DVD at the same time as it trashes blanks I'm trying to record. The disc shows about a third has been written-on - but presumably not enough to finalise, These recordings disc won't play at all . . . . but old ones are OK to play...... That's until the above failure.

Apart from that it's been very good for 12 years or more . . . .

Cheers
