I recently got a new PC that came with a CD/DVD RW all in one recorder (NEC 3100 AD).

The problem is, it doesn't recognise blank DVDs in the drive so I cant write to DVD-R/RWs at all.
As its an all in one drive the CD/DVD has to be copied to a temp directory before it asks for a blank disc.
With CD-Rs it works fine but with DVD-Rs I get no result.

If anyone could tell me why this happens and what I should do I would be very grateful.

What are the blank disks that it doesn't recognise?

Perhaps I mis-undertood your first post. Have you tried both + and - disks?

I've used Google and my guess is that it is a Dell that you bought.

I think you may have to call them and arrange a swap.

Oh I get it now. Im so clueless with CD/ DVD writers. Correct it is a Dell I had no idea that there was any difference between +/- R. I just assumed it was written with a - traditionally lol. So I need to get hold of some DVD+Rs and try them out.

I've heard that the model can be upgraded via a firmware download. Is this a safe option?

Thanks for the help, much appreciated.
