dvd re writer drives

    need one to back up some dvds in my collection,namely my jap sp edition dts discs,
    is the technology good now and how long does it take to burn backups

    backups normally conisitt of 4.3 gb not 4.7 stated on the disk. Depending on the size of them film you may not be able to backup the entire DVD just the film. (dvd-5 or dvd9 -dual layer) If the disk you intend to back up is DVD5 single layer then you will be fine. But if its dvd9 then you'll may have to either re encode the dvd or stip it to get the movie.

    Now speeds are great but they are increasing too, last i saw you can get a nice one for 10x but the media aint out. However you can get a dual layer burner too but ive yet to see the mdeia for that..

    i'm getting one too, i'd get a dual layer drive
    they have good single layer speed and have the future proofing for when dual layer media is out
    dual layer burning is slow, but you can leave it to burn unattended
    single layer should take 15 minutes or less, not too bad imo
