After extensive research...well..... reading through this forum.

I have finally come to the conclusion that I will NOT now be getting a DVD recorder with a HDD to complement the HDD already in my Sky+ decoder

The reason being that any DVD I want to keep will be edited and authored on my PC. I read that editing is easier on a HDD, but we are still left only with basic menus. This does not really justify the 400 quid price difference between the Panny E60 and E100.

Therefore I will write all my stuff to DVD-RAM, and edit and author on my PC and burn to DVD-r. As I already have Pioneer AO5 in my PC, all I really need is a new drive that can read DVD-RAM.

Any suggestions and best places to buy from?

Make me an offer for a panny DVD RAM only drive!!!

I want to get a DVD -R/RAM burner to replace it.

Its one of the first generation (I was an early adopter)

There is also a LG DVD ROM drive that I have seen in Curry's. It mentions DVD RAM on the box.

I have a LG super recorder that does RAM/+/- and it is fantastic. My Dad has a LG CDRW/ROM drive that also reads RAM.

Check out the LG GSA4040 DVD writer. The specs say it can read & write to any DVD format, including DVD-RAM. It's a fairly new product so not much info on the web yet. I've seen the drive for £199.99 in the Tottenham Court Road & online for £130.

Havn't tries any -format disks yet.

I have been using memorex +RW's with my 4040 drive as well. They have burnt fine first time with Nero 6 (there is 6.0.0.19 now).

I have tried Maxell -R's and they work ok as well. I have used Philips +RW, Imation +RW, HP +RW, Datawrite +R and they alll work fine in the drive. I also have JVC -R's waiting to be used.

Not many DVD ROM drives actually read the + format (very few read +RW but not +R). All ROM drives will work with the - format though.

Thanks for the info on the LF4040 nwg.

I was still using Nero 5.5.10.28 but now updated to 5.5.10.50.
Still no joy here with Nero.Too tight to move to Nero 6.

Are you using the original firmware supplied with the LG or have you updated it to the A300 version?

I am using the orginal firmware which is A104.

I wouldn't attempt to upgrade the firmware with a writer. If it was a £30 DVD ROM, then I would, I found the A300 firmware but don't know if it would work with the UK model.

The firmware AFAIK only sorts out a problem with 4x Princo discs. I don't have any plans to write at 4x anyway. Also, Princo discs are sometimes regarded as not very good when compared to other makes.

v5.5.10.20 is fine and anything above 5.5.9.x will work with the LG.

There's certainly something odd about my drive and the Memorex disks.
Nero 5.5.10.28 gives an "Illegal media " error
Nero 5.5.10.50 says something like "unable to format" followed by "unable to start disk at once"
    The program then aborts.

Will give Nero 6 demo a tryout over the weekend and see what happens..

Incidentally if I use DVD Pictureshow V2 from Ulead to burn slideshows onto DVD+RW then I have no problems whatsoever with the disk playing correctly in my Samsung S224.
Copy2DVD on the other hand will burn data files in one session only - it can't handle multisession.

    Try this program.

    http://www.dvdinfopro.com/index.php

You can try formatting the memorex disc in that program. It had a function to read the manufacturer info on the disc. Try and read that.

I bought my discs from SVP (£1.49 each) and the program reads them 'made by CMC'.

I burnt the midnight oil last night or should I say this morning , downloaded Nero 6 and installed the demo version.Memorex disks now burn correctly. It looks like I have a problem with my Nero 5 setup so will switch to 6.
Thanks for the link to the dvdinfo program - I'll try it out.

    Glad to help.

I actually use that program to format the RW discs. I think it formats the discs better than Nero.

When I formatted with Nero, I have had a previous recording appear on the TV on the disc after formatting and putting another video clip on the disc. Nero does seem to format discs pretty quickly.

Thanks for the offer nunew33, but I always buy new.

Actually I need to know which Panasonic DVD-RAM drive (not writer) for a PC takes the caddied disks.

LG 4163B I have just installed for ram writing, reads and writes all formats I recall. From what I was told, its a decent drive but you may want to verify that.

It is a fine drive. I have a older LG 4040. What you going to write to RAM? For the RAM to work in a TV Recorder. The disc needs to written as a VRO file. Of course it can also store normal computer files for backup.
