    Hi,

Has anyone tried the MIRROR PLATIUM DVD-R 4.7GB GENERAL (3 GEN) DVD-R, available at www.blankcdr.co.uk, with the Panasonic DMRE20? I've tried the Princo Branded ones they have listed with limited success (only 2 out of 5 worked) and thus I'm still on the lookout for a cheap DVD-R.

    Thanks

I've been using Vivastar DVDr discs without incident in a Panasonic DMR-E20. They are the only media manufacturer in Europe, but the product is excellent.

    try www.tigerdirect.com

Check the posts at AV Forums > AV Hardware > DVD Players and recorders > DVD-R blanks for DMR-E20

I got a strong recommendation for the Americal disks and bought 5 for trial on my E20. All worked fine.

    Ok. I stand corrected!

Anyway, I'm beginning to think that not all DMR20e's are created equal!

I have bought a load of unbranded Vivastars and 50% of them don't write and the ones that do, don't work in my Sony player.

I've had 100% success with Princo Branded and they play fine in my Sony and Pioneer players. Other users have had problems with them. All very odd.

There are presumably different versions of the actual DVD drive fitted during the production run and this would account for it. All anyone can do is keep trying until they find a brand they are happy with and then stick with it. I shant buy in bulk again, that's for sure!

I have just tried the gen 3 Datasafe disc in my E20 and they don't work. The machine just shuts down after a few seconds.

My supplier is not advertising the FWS discs that I normally use with little problem. So i am up a gum tree at the moment for cheap DVD-R media that the E20 is happy with.

    @ malcolm

I had problems with the Datasafe 3 Gen disks as well. Apparently the dye used is the same as the FWS ones.

However one thing I noticed is that the Datasafe are a slightly thinner disc profile wise. This may have something to do with it.

Try the traxdata or whitelabel 3 as well, you may have better luck.

Hi,I've tried 1 mirror dvd-r and although it recorded fine,it did not play back on the E-20 so well, the disc stuttered and pixelated.I've also had this problem with the datasafe gen 3 discs. They record fine but stutter and pixelate.Ialso tried both the discs in my panny xv10 dvd player and that had the same problem, the discs played for a while then started stuttering. The only discs I've had success with are the TDK's upto now no coasters they play fine onthe e-20 and my xv10 player.I'm going to try some JVC dvd-r which should be here in the next couple of days so I will let you know how I get on with those.

    Hi Ekko Star.

Today I have just tried two other brands from SVP. One branded "Choice" and the other "ICE" white top.

I only purchased one of each and both have recorded ok in the E20. Both appear to be ok when played in my Pioneer 444 player but I have not had time to view the full 4 hours yet.

However neither will play back in my computer DVD drive. The "ICE" one gets as far as the menu but when I click to play the computer gives me one of those "illeagal" error messages.

My computer drive is somewhat erratic as to what it will play though. It reject pansonic and TDK DVD-R disc but plays FWS and some of the verbatim. Why some??? very strange...

    Hi Malcolm

DVDR media seems to be a bit pot luck at times !

Ordered a load more FWS from SVP. They are the only ones for me that record the whole of the disc and never seem to pixelate. Good disc that plays well on a load of players as well.

Am trying some Whitelabel ones soon and have also had a generally successful run with Princo 2nd gen.

Let me know how you get on with the ICE and Choice ones. One of each is probably too little to know if they are good overall, see how you get on after about 10 or so of them.:)

Will do Ekko Star. I too am waiting for a batch of FWS expected in the next couple of days. When I need more and if the other two types are still available I'll get about 5 of each and test them further.

The reason I am staying mainly with FWS is that they are the most likely ones that will play in my computer drive as well. I tried the others in fear that the FWS disc supply may dry up or even worse they do a generation change that makes them like Datasafe. I don't want to put all my eggs in one basket and rely on one brand of cheap disc.

With DVD recorders becoming cheaper there could be a bigger demand for DVD-Rs and stockist could well have to keep us waiting for supplies. But then that's just gloom and doom me...:):)

yup know what you mean, being stuck with a batch of duds is no fun.

However as it becomes more popular the discs have been getting better.:)

    @malcolm

Just rec'd my batch of FWS from SVP.

Only tried one and it seems fine. The only thing is this is the 3rd batch I've had from them and every batch is different.

The code on the inner circle has been different with every batch and the back of the disc in each batch has a different purple inner band.

As I have said before even if you buy the same brand you will not necessarily get the same discs you were using before.

I just hope all these will be fine.

Hi Ekko Star. I recieved mine today also but haven't tried one yet. I have never even thaught to look at the code numbers on the different baches that I have had so far. I would expect them to be different "don't know why". I have just looked at part filled disc I am currently recording to and it doesn't have any numbers at all... My latest bach number is 2155k113 04332 08 " I expect yours is the same"

The inner band on mine looks blue this time, but i may be colour blind. The previous batch band had hardly any colour at all.

I know when the price dropped from £1-99 to 87p I only purchased a couple of the 87p ones in case there had been a change in quality as well. One worked and one failed half way through a recording. When I looked closely at the failed disc I could see a blob of colour change on the disc. something wrong under the surface as it was to large to be regarded a scuff mark or scratch.

The FWS dvd-r is the best disc going...
It used to be made in the UK. And was tested from version 1 to
the now Version 2 by a load of peeps on PS2 forums.

They have worked great in the PS2 and all home dvd palyers i have tried.

Just dont stick them some where cold...i keep them in my front
room so the are at a good temp..I did burn one in my E20 when
it was to cold and it would not finalize...so i got a hair dryer and
heated it up a small amount and put it back in, worked a treat ;).

By the way try not to use 2x dvd-r discs...u may not be able to
    read them on ya PC.

tried my second FWS of this batch and it failed.

I noticed a small indent in the dye, not quite a blob but a very slight indent which shows up on reflection.

The dreaded "U11" came up when the disc had reached writing just before this point on the disc.

Will check all the others and see if any "perfect" discs have problems.

What is going on is these later batches of FWS are probably not the quite the same formula dye as the original ones. I think since Datasafe have taken them this is what has been happening.

As I said before buying the same brand doesn't ensure that you are getting the same disc as before.;)
