Can't seem to record from dvd-r disc to the hard drive on a Panasonic hs2, so I can not
make a copy. Is there a way to copy dvd-r on this machine.
    Thanks.

You can only copy from DVD-R to HDD if the disk is not yet finalised. Panasonic didn't build in this function for obvious copy protection reasons. My suggestion here would be to either purchase a cheap DVD burner for your PC or take the disk down to a DVD burner equipped Internet Cafe and burn it there.

Would it be possible then to record the dvd-r disc from a cheap dvd player to the hs2 via the scart socket.
    Thanks

Yes as the DVD-R doesn't have any sort of copy protection. You should be able to link any DVD player that can play DVD-Rs upto the HS2 and copy the DVD. Obviously there will be a slight drop in quality (how much depends on your setup) but, whatever, it should be minimal.
