Are there any mid priced DVD players that also do a great job of CD playback?

Yes there are! I have a Pioneer 626D and its great for music CD's. It easily beats seperate type CD Players uptp £150.

The Pioneer 636 is pretty much the same as my old 626, so that should be fine. If you can stretch to £500 on a DVD Player than go for the Pioneer 737 which is suppose to have fantastic CD Playback.

Thanks Gareth. The 737 looks great, but out of my price range.

Do you think the Pioneer 535 would be any good? Is it just a 636 without the internal decoders?
