    A fairly specific criteria, but does anyone happen to know of a dvd player that is:
    Black, MR, that upscales (under £100)?

    Preferably a player that isn't bonkers in some way (i.e. lip sync issues / turning off for no reason etc.)

    Help / guidance would be much appreciated.

    Not sure but either of the pioneers are under 100 pounds i think, the 490v im sure comes in black and 696 not sure. There is the sony 76ns but i think only in silver for that one.

    Cheers, I had a quick look at the 490v online (I unearthed a review) - it says it's good for NTSC but not so good for PAL (something about it being made in America and having to compensate for PAL discs).

    Cambridge Audio and Samsung both have players in black I believe, if anyone has any opinions?

    That's a good price.

    Blimey, that is a good price.

    What's the catch?

    the samsung looks good for the price. The 490v i just read that not processing properly PAL discs is due to the Mediatek chipset of which the more expensive pioneer the 689 doesnt suffer from. But the samsung doesnt look like much of a risk.

    Thanks for that Evans.

    Since researching the Samsung I've come across the Toshiba SD370 - but I'm reading it's not MR hackable.

    For the price, the Samsung fits the bill.

    Thanks again.

    I received the Samsung 870 player yesterday from empiredirect (delivered price of £44.95 - via google checkout - only ordered it on Monday)

    First thoughts are i'm well pleased with it. Smart looking in gloss black, seems well built for the money and works superbly via HDMI.

    Haven't applied the handset hack yet for MR, but all in all well chuffed with it :D

    To hack the Samsung DVD-HD870 to make it multi-region do the following:

    * turn on dvd player
    * make sure there's no dvd in closed tray
    * press 'repeat' button
    * 'no disc' disappears in left corner
    * press 57538 (NB. this code only works on Region 2 machines)
    * current region code is visible in left corner
    * press 9 for code free
    * press 'Standby'
    * enjoy!

    I know this works as I own one and have used it myself.
