Do DVD players use different laser heads to read single and dual layered discs?

The reason I ask is that My DVD player has refused to read any type of disc except single layered DVD, be they CD, CD-RW or dual layered DVD. While I'll get it fixed, I just wonder if a players use separate heads to read different discs.

AFAIK dvd players have a single head that re-focuses the beam to read the second layer ...

You do get dual laser pickups, one optimised for cds and the other for dvds. Your problem sounds like the focussing mechanism has failed and the drive is permantly focused on the first layer of a dvd.
