Does anyone have any particular recommendations for a DVD player to match with a Sanyo Z2 projector? If you have a combination which is working especially well, I'd be very grateful to know about it.

    Many thanks.

Thanks for that. I know that Cambridge audio gear is well regarded, but I didn't realise they made a DVD player.

Andrew, many thanks. I'll take a look at the Oppo; I must confess it's a make I've never heard of.

    Edited to add:

It looks good. Is it (or can it be made) multi-region?

    Edited (again) to add:

Aha! I've just discovered that it can, very easily.

Mine came as multiregion. There is an easy remote hack for multiregion too.

It is made by BBK which is one of the largest manufacturers of DVD players in the world - Chinese, naturally. There are two enormous threads about it on the US AVforum site. It is a cult player amongst AV aficionados:

    http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=482239

    http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=491306

It became very popular after it won this test:

    Andrew,

Thanks very much for those links. It does seem like a superb choice.

I don't know whether I made this clear but I am using these players with a Z2. In the old firmware (which you might receive if you order an Oppo now, since the new firmware is very recent) you will need to set brightness on the Oppo to +5 before calibrating your display. The new firmware has reset the "0" brightness level to be the old "+5".

Hi. I use a Samsung HD-745 and think it is great! Scales to 720p, multi-region(with a hack), SACD, divx....really is great! You can get the newer 950 from Richer Sounds for about £130, though this is HDMI, so you'd need a DVI-HDMI cable (though I think the player might come with one of these in the box??).

The only other player I've considered is one of the Snazzi HD players, that can play WMV-HD etc, but probably going to wait to see what else happens with the HD scenario over the next few months

    Dean.

I've just returned my second denon 1920 because it wouldn't show HDMI picture with my Z2.

Swapped it for the Samsung 950, second choice, but at least it works!

Thanks to everyone who responded. I now have an Oppo 971H, which is giving me a superb picture from the Z2 at 720p using DVI.

The player's remote isn't the best-designed in the world, either for looks, feel or layout, but it does the job; and it's worth the effort of getting used to it for the excellent results from the player.

Glad you're happy with the player.
But did you get a full picture with upscaled 720p ?

    Waled,

In 720p there's a blank border just a few pixels wide at the edges of the projected image; the exact size of the border varies from DVD to DVD, but I've no reason to suppose that I'm not seeing everything that's on the discs. Is that what you mean?

The only mild annoyance I've found so far with the Oppo/Z2 combination is that the Z2 automatically reverts to "Full" screen display mode after ejecting a region 2 disc, and has to be manually returned to "True" mode for the next one. This doesn't happen with R1 discs for some reason.

    Bert,

I'm trying get full screen picture on the 950 but get a 4:3 aspect ratio picture with large black vertical borders. 1080i is fine though.

    Waled,

I'm certainly not having that problem, though it occurs to me that so far I've only tried widescreen DVDs. Tonight I'll give a 4:3 disc a spin and see what happens. I'm sure you've thought of this, but is there a setting in the 950 that you might have incorrectly set, forcing a 4:3 picture? Though I don't know why that would affect 720p and not 1080i.

    Bert,

mentioned seperately in my thread but just to let you know also.
I pressed 'screen' button on Z2 to 'full' and now the 720p pictures is full screen. I'm not sure if this the right way though. Puzzling how 1080i worked full screen on normal mode.
My fight to get the Denon 1920 to work meant I've reset all machines I had and cannot remember what I needed to change back.
    Thanks for your help Bert
