    Hello!

This has probably been discussed before, but I am new to the site so lets do it again!:)

What are your opinions of playing DVD on the Playstation 2?

    What is the quality like?

How does it compare with a DVD player of the same price (around £200)?

Does it have problems playing any discs?

Does the 'Region X' work properly for Region 1 DVDs?

I am about to buy one and am curious to know!

Thanks (in advance!) for your input,

    Lex.

P.S. Does anyone know whether there will be a (unofficial obviously!) multi-region add on for the XBOX?

Sorry to break up the lex and lexx thread but I can always change my name to lexxx for continuity.

The PS2 has been reviewed by the mags and was found to be relatively poor at playing DVD's and is no comparison to a decent £200 machine such as the Toshibe 210 or Pioneer 444

    The more Lex's the merrier!

    Tnanks Lexx for the link.

I know that the PS2 has been reviewed by magazines etc, but I just wondered how people had found it from personal use/experience. Is it really that bad?

If you are used to VCR quality then the PS2 will have an improved picture and you would be happy.

However, out of the box, the PS2 cannot output RGB via the scart for DVD playback so you are limited to s-video quality. This puts it at a disadvantage over the other dvd players which do output RGB.

Generally, most consider the PS2 to be a stop-gap dvd player or an ideal bedroom player. If you don't have a small tv, you probably wouldn't notice much difference between the different players. On 32" sets or larger, the differences would become noticeable, if you were to compare the two.

Compared with my 2 year old Samsung 709 the PS2 via component video on a 32" TV was a big improvement. However, I've just bought a Sony NS900V and that is a further leap ahead.

The picture is eminently watchable from the PS2 on a 32" TV so you won't have any real gripes I reckon, particularly if you use the DVD playback feature as a bonus on top of the gaming features.
