quick Q are HDDVD & BLUERAY backward compatable
The players can play DVD's if that's what you're asking.
You can buy a couple of BD players that have a hardware hack to play any region but they're expensive, otherwise you're stuck with whatever region you buy.
HD-DVD and Blu-ray (no "e") media won't play in DVD players
not sure exactly what you were meaning in your original question
Just to complete the picture Blu-ray players are also region locked to Blu-ray regions. HD DVD players are region free for HD DVD. We are seeing some Blu-ray players that claim to be multi-region via hardware mods but we don't know how this may be affected my future software changes. There is also a software hack for some Tosh HD DVD players that allows MR DVD playback but the last I heard there may have been an issue on some DVD's due to copy protection.
the question is i have a lot of standard dvds and if i buy a new machine to replace my original i need to know if they will play on blueray or hddvd machines
yes they will as long as the regions are the same.
