can anyone recommend a dvd player to fit with a hitachi pd425200 plasma (arriving monday)..also speakers?

cheers

Are you looking for a player, or a recorder (which will also play, of course). Your post says player, but this is the recorder forum?

You need to decide whether to buy a DVD player or DVD Recorder.
If you don't intend to record anything then just have a player.
You need to do a fair bit of research, first.
Look at the articles at www.homecinemachoice.com

A quick answer, then I’ll defer to others more knowledgeable for details.

A HDD/DVD recorder will do what you want to do – it will record from Sky, it will play DVDs and CDs.

Take a look at Rasczak’s buying guide as a start.

If you are looking for the best quality playback and music systems, generally you can get better quality with having a separate DVD and CD player (as well as a recorder).

You could always start with the recorder, and later add a DVD or CD player if you wanted to improve that part.
