dvd drive spin down utility?

    Hey guys, is there such an above thing? I have a Lite-on 16x dvd drive and it always seems to spin like a demon when playing dvds and I want it to slow down and be QUIETER!!

    Not sure about a utility that does just that, but AnyDVD includes that feature among many others.

    If you have nero installed you can set a hard limit for the dvd drives "top speed"

    But, the more clever manufacturers take the following approach.
    If the disc inserted is NOT an original dvd, then spin it as fast as it can go. If it is an original dvd, then spin it down to about 2x.

    This means, when you watch a movie the drive isnt spinning at mach5 and doesnt make so much noise. The downside is for those folks that want to rip the dvd to the harddrive is that it takes longer.

    This speed changing algorythm is in most of the lite-on driver, and as lite-on make drives for sony it should also be in the sony drives (implemented via the drives firmware)
