    Hi!

I'm trying to find out where to get one of those TV configuration DVDs, you know, the ones with which you can setup the brightness, contrast and colour values so that they are accurately set up.

I've heard them mentioned on here before but I can't remember what they're called so I don't know what to search for!!

    Thanks in advance!! :)

I got Digital Video Essentials on Amazon for about £17. Comes with the calibration filter. Whereever you buy, just make sure you get an English PAL copy as many of the early ones were NTSC or, from my recollection, German only.

    Hi Phil,
I use Avia to set mine up which is pretty well regarded, although it is specifically for NTSC standards I don't find any problems with PAL playback.

The contrast section in both DVE & AIVA are NOT suitable for plasma and LCD displays,as they are only good for CRT for checking the "blooming", for plasma & LCD, other test patterns in the same discs should be used. I think there was some detail discussion on this issue in USA's av forum before.

Being an novice in the plasma tv, I think those discs are very useful to help me to start from somewhere ( I'm using DVE because it is cheaper ), it is much better than messing about based on my deceiving bare eyes only.

i used the THX optimiser on one of the Star Wars DVDs to set the levels on my plasma. Looked 10x better after doing so as stock levels were set far too high.

Cheers!! I heard that THX DVDs had optimisers built into them. I've got sixty something DVDs and I don't have a single THX DVD!! I'll go up to my neighbour's in a bit and see if he has one (he's got 200+ DVDs).

Want to set up my new screen!! :)

    Hi,
It talks about the contrast test tones on the Avia setup tutorials and why blooming is not a plasma issue.
If you like I could send you my Avia disc to have a try as long as you promise to send it back again;)

I'll pull out my Attack of the clones THX DVD. How does the optimisation work? does it tell you to up and down the colour/contrast etc using on screen graphics?

    basically yes...

it goes through various steps for setting up brightness, contrast etc and explains the function and purpose of each one as you go along.

    Phil,
In the main menu...set up, you should see THX optimizer, might just be a logo can't quite remember.
