The -R format is supposed to be more compatable but I have one DVD player that works well with +RW and +R, and SOME -R, and another that works with +RW and -R, but refuses +R completely.

I use more -R as they are cheaper, especially the printable ones.

DVD-R has the best compatibility with DVD-Video players. Use the best quality dye media you can get. I've tried Datawrite Yellowtop and Pioneer DVD-R's and they work on 1st generation DVD players. No problems whatsoever.

Think mine is a first generation DVD and my mate brought a Datawrite Yellowtop DVD+R round and it would not look at it. Burnt a slide show to a Datasafe One DVD DVD-RW but it would not look at that either but I believe re-writable can cause problems on old machines, (it did work on a Tosh 330 though).

From my experiences DVD-R is the most compatible.

As for which blanks to get, I've found that any made by Ritek are the bees knees, they work on every DVD player I've tried, and perfectly on the PS2.
Look for ones with "ADVDINFO: .RITEKG..0x" (x being 2,3 or 4) on http://www.blankdiscshop.co.uk
