I read the article in HC and mentioned to an AV Dealer that I thought it should catch on better than DTS Audio Discs ever did because DVD-A has three distinct tracks on it ...
Super Duper DVD-A which only a DVD-A machine can decode ...
Super Duper DVD-A stereo (ditto above) ...
DD5.1 which any DVD player (DD5.1 capable) can decode ...
I suggested that I might buy DVD-A discs right away as I could at least listen to the DD5.1 while I wait for DVD-A machines to become the standard and then I would upgrade in a year or two (dont tell the missus!)
The dealer I was discussing this with suggested (politely) I was talking out of my RSE ...
    Who's right ? Me or Him ?

Certainly the discs that have just been released do follow that pattern.

Whether all DVD-A discs will be like that remains to be seen. In time, I'm sure they'll all turn DVD-A only.

It is part of the spec that DVD-A discs are backwards compatible. So yes you can start buying now and listen to the DD 5.1 sound on your existing dvd player and upgrade when you like.As for the dealer you were speaking to he was either (a) trying to get you to but a DVD-A player now from him, or (B) taking out of his rce and doesn't know diddly.
