I have done a search on this forum for this player, and there was a mention of this player been both NTSC and PAL progressive scan with an update, but then nothing more was said as i have seen it for £400 and it gets a great writeup in whatcinema mag i was seriously considering it,

but i definately am after both PAL and NTSC can anyone shed any light on the subject?

Also owners of the player, is there hacks/updates to make it region free?

There seem to be a lot of issues with this player, so I would steer clear. Do a search and see what it brings up.

I often wonder how the mags review these players, because they never seem to mention things like chroma bug (which is a deal breakere for some), yet it's pretty obvious it's there with some players. I bought a player they raved about, but sent it back due to image 'issues' which are well documented both here and over at avs, yet they never saw them....

The new 2900 is better, but still has problems IIRC.

    Gary.

Thanks m8 i think i have decided on the Pioneer DV757AI as it seems they are pretty reliable,

I have had my Sony S7700 for 3 years and still love it so i am hoping the Pioneer lasts me just as long

    Thanks

    Hi Betamac

Go to www.afdigitale.it and choose download from the top menu. Then goto firmware on the left hand side of the page. Choose DVD-Video and inside you will find region free code to download to make the 2800 MK2, 3800 and DVD A1 region free and pal and ntsc progressive.

Well I can't pretend to be vc820, but I have tried the firmware (assuming it is the same one they had on the site a few months ago).

It does enable progressive scan for PAL & NTSC, but there are definately problems with it. I find it caused frequent lip-synch problems. It isn't constant so an amp with audio delay is no help at all. I tried various combinations of film mode etc, but no good.

Unless the firmware is very recent, I'd strongly recommend you leave it.

    Hi Dimmy

I have tried the firmware at Afdigitale it is version 9104-3. I had some problems with this firmware and region 2 Columbia Tristar titles. e.g. the picture would break up along the bottom third of the screen if you started calling up the on screen menu. However I've also found some firmware at www.geocities.com/mr_merrick this is version 6098 and I have not had a single problem with any disc since installing it.

Although I use component output my display does not have progressive scan facilities and most of my watching is region 2, although I have a few region 1 discs. I've tried over a hundred films with this firmware. No problems as of yet, fingers crossed.

Denon have just officially announced (in Germany anyway) an official PAL progressive firmware upgrade for all 2800 MKII, 3800 and DVD A1 owners. Will be interesting to see how good this version is once I can find it to download.

I just got hold of a copy of the German Pal progressive update cd

The version is DRV 1-69-0 ; ESS 9104-4

It is region 2 only. Bugger

I compared the 9104-3 & 9104-4 in a hex editor and both are quite different.

    I can't coment on it as I only have 2 R2 dvds.

Well, I'll definitely go for this one. The one from the Italian site made my player pretty much unusable (due to bad lip-synch), so I'd prefer decent PAL progressive only to Multi-region with major problems.

Having said that, what we all want is obviously multiregion & PS for PAL and NTSC, along with no lip-synch (or other) problems. What's the view on this - do people think this is still an attainable goal?

there are four files in this rar :
    IMAGE.CCD
    IMAGE.cue
    IMAGE.img
    IMAGE.sub.
Any hint how to make the CD. Just put them all on Iso CD or use img only or something else. Thanks.

I know CDRWIN supports .cue files. If you use this and point it to the cue file it should be able to make a CD for you out of one of the other files. Otherwise I know stomp recordmax and nero both support .img files

After much downloading of programs to create the CD I finally managed to update the firmware to:

    ESS 9104-4
    DRV 6200-2

The update has resolved the problems with screen breakup on the two disks I had known issues with, Saving Private Ryan and Shrek, I have'nt experienced any issues so far with disks which worked previously. I don't have any non R2 disks so I can't check if it has disabled the Multi Region ability.

I still have PAL progressive, but I did notice that when I have it set to 'FILM' that I get the occasional screen pause on Shrek (Only through component). This dissapeared though when I set it back to 'AUTO' which gave better picture results all round.

If anyone wishes me to try any movies I'll check to see if I have it or can get hold of it.

 Thanks to MrC for passing this on it seems to have done the trick

    Cheers,
    JP  :D

ps I can't say I noticed the lip sync problem
