OK LOOKS LIKE IM GETTING A DV88.
For £250 and will be used with my projecter, (yet to buy)
So what i need to know is,
1- What software flash upgrades should i use?
2- Do they still upgrade the 88 to dv88+ and so on?
3- How long will they do this for?
4- Will they be able to replace the front facia as it has a small crack?
    5- How much?
    6- Am i making a mistake?
7- does the dv88 do any form of PScan?
8- What does it do, that good?

If anyone can answer any of these questions and make me feel better about doing this, it would be apprecated.

    Dave

    1. vaddis 3 updates (lastest 1.81 I believe) + Drive firmware
    2. Yes.. ti would need to go back to arcam.. you can upgrade to DV88+/89 or just add a sil progscan card to make a DV88P
    3. Who knows.. as long as they sell DV88+/89 I guess
    4. Yes.
    5. Not sure it would be a part price + labour. If u upgraded the machine you should get a new front anyhow
    6. Not for £250 its a bargain
    7. No scart rgb and component outs / s-video all interlaced no progscan.
    8. Lovely picture and sound quality to die for, multi-region out of the box with no extra chips / hacking.. and its plays cd's very well

thanks, im sure about it now.

im not bothered about multi channel music so which upgrade would be best for movies,(visual and sound) i guy on a different thred said that you could just add the Pscan board used on the fmj for about £350.
    thanks for your help

Thats very true it would make the player A DV88P its about £400 for the upgrade to DV88+ which would do progscan via the vaddis 5 chip..

Arcam direct or your local dealer (arcam is probably easier for you)

    thanks for the info matt.

    just a few last things.
Just to see if iv'e got things stright.

dv88 has a vaddis 3 chip that donsn't do PS

i could upgrade to a 88p that would anable it on the vaddis 3?

I could also upgrade it to 88+ which would add the vaddis 5?

or to the 89 which would add the vaddis 5 and DVD-A

What PS board does the fmj players use?

    thakns again.

never mind all that. I understand it all now

but i would like to know, is how much is it for the sil proscan board?
And is there much difference, between the performance of the Pscan sil card over vaddis 5?
    thanks

I believe the upgrade to the sil board (DV88p) is £350 and yes its meant to be better than the vaddis 5 chip as it is a dedicated board.. sorry I do not know how much difference... as I still run my DV88+ in interlaced... not bought a pj yet :)

The analogue outputs, as the DV88 has very good DAC's.

If you are buying it from RS in Boxing Day Sale, it will let you compare at home for seven days.
You may feel keeping your Panasonic.

    Ask yourself....
    1. Can you see a difference in picture quality on your TV ?
    2. Does it sound better ?
    3. Good value buying a discontinued player with front panel cosmetic damage having only a three month guarantee ?
    4. Sensible paying to upgrade to Vaddis 5 / Sil 504 ?
    5. Is disc navigation and layer change better ?

If the answers to the above are negative then your £250 initial outlay and provisional £400 upgrading budget can be better spent when PJ arrives on a more up to date player ?

If the answers to the above are affirmative, at least you have proved it to yourself rather than simply take the opinions of others.

    Best to try it.

    Hi clancol

    Just my 2 penny's worth.

For £250 an absolute steal, very good as a CD player (reckoned to be around the CD62 almost CD72 level). Very nice transport if you are considering an offboard DAC, I have used mine with a Tag DAC20 with great results.

But as you say that music is not important and IF you need prog scan then adding £350 for the Sil board takes you to £600 and for that sort of money you would be advised to at least consider another more up to date DVD player and possibly get DVDA and SACD support along with prog scan and a full warranty. The Denon 2900 would be top of my list to audition.

For the record I am very happy with my DV88P into Z1 via prog scan and before that via interlaced RGB and S-Vid in 28" CRT and 41" and 46" Rear Projection TV's. The picture quality was a large jump up from my Pioneer 606.

    Gus
