Hi, is it worth upgrading my 88+ wth the Silicon Progresive Scan board purely for picture quality or would I be better of getting a DV27 or 27A.

We'd love to sell you a new 27A but in reality it will be much less expensive to add the PS board to your 88 Plus (£350 IIRC). There will be no material difference in PQ between these two routes.

    Hi John,

Are you saying I (we) get a better pic quality with this upgrade?

Is this also the update that give us 88 Plus owners DVD-A sound as well?

    Many thanks

I recently got this upgrade for my DV88+ (and no it's quite different from the DVD-A upgrade).

I does provide improvement to progressive scan picture quality. I've especially noticed improved black levels and color that's more vibrant and natural. I see more shadow detail and pictures look more three dimensional and textured.

I'm glad I have the upgrade and recommend it. It's certainly a lot cheaper than getting a DV27A.

BTW: it's a simple upgrade. A reasonably skilled dealer should be able to do it, unlike the DVD-A upgrade which requires sending the unit back for factory retrofit.

Is this upgrade available for the no progressive plain vanilla DV88? (for the same money?)

So it's a worthy upgrade for picture quality. But would I have to pay another £350 for the DVD-A upgrade as well? I don't see me spending £700 upgrading my 88Plus when I could almost get the newer 79 model which has everything already?

But if Arcam would do both upgrades for £350 then i'll be off to my dealer Saturday! Seriously I would.

The two upgrades are mutually exclusive. Getting one doesn't save you anything when getting the other, AFAIK.

Hi, Thanks for the reply, it would seam to be a worth while upgrade then. Now all I have to do is decide whether to get it or buy a DV27A.

Personally, if I had a DV88+ and wanted both the PS and DVD-A upgrades together, then I would consider trading up to a DV27A. But for just one, upgrading the DV88+ is worthwhile, which is what I did to get the better PS board. I'd eventually like to get the DVD-A upgrade, but don't have plans to yet.

I think you go via your dealer, but a quick call to Arcam will confirm

My upgrade was arranged thru my dealer. It takes maybe 30 minutes to perform the surgery.
