Thinking of getting either of these players and would like some opinions with regard to the following questions.

Which player has the better picture quality. (I know the Arcam is pal and ntsc prog scan ready).

Is the Arcams sound quality as good as the Denon?

Can the Arcam be upgraded via a firmware fix to be dvd-Audio?

if you want dvd-a on the Arcam wait for DV89 which is being launched at the Bristol show next week. although I understand the DV88+ is or will be upgradable.

I would suggest you look at the spec and price of the Pioneer 757Ai too! No pal prog but the rest is impressive, price and quality very good.

The Arcam has fantastic picture quality, which is achieved without endless menus of picture enhancements.
It’s plays CDs on par with Arcam’s own CD72T, which is a highly regarded and award winning player itself.
The DV89 player is due out very soon (premier at the Bristol Show I think), and is a DV88+ fitted with the DVD-Audio board, and will retail for £1200.
You can buy the DV88+ and pay £200 and have the upgrade done by your local dealer if you so wish.
If you do a search, you will find quite a bit about this, including contributions from Mr Arcam himself, John Dawson.

But does the 757Ai do bass management properly for DVD-A? I know it can't do SACD time alignment adjustments (and may well not do SACD bass management properly) but I'm not sure about the DVD-A side of things.

The Denon apparently does bass management and time alignment properly and the new Arcam is supposed to aswell.

The 757Ai bears no comparison to its predecessor 747. DVD-A performance is fabulous. Plenty of bass, detail and clarity. I have compared it to the Denon before I bought it and the DVD-A side is the best I have heard so far. Again, a check of your own will convince you... trusting your own very ears!

Also do a search on the Denon. I think there have one or two issues.

My money would go on the Arcam

I too was wondering between the denon and the arcam.

I took the arcam in the end because it can be upgraded eaisly (to dvd audio or the sil504), great customer service if you are in the UK, true PAL progressive, excellant cd playback for a dvd player and cause it looks cool

Still, the chipset on the denon is better (imo) though for 200 pounds you can upgrade it too the one like the denons.

The denon and the pany are great players though and I dont think you could complain about either - I thought the arcam suited me best.

I got mine for 900 fully moded and I'm very pleased.

Well thanks for all your advice. After listening to everyone I have decided to go for the Arcam.

There is evidence that the Denons can suffer from a few probs and that the customer support is not the best.

Looking forward to it now. :hiya:
