DV79 HDMI output

Is the DV79s HDMI output upgradable to carry audio as well as video when the audio standards are finalised. Or will it require the purchase of the next generation of player?

The DV79's HDMI output carries 2 channel audio to SPDIF standards. This means 2 channel 48 kHz sampled audio plus DD and DTS streams.

A PDF of the player's specification is now available on our website at http://www.arcam.co.uk/news/index.cfm#35 .

There is no silicon currently in volume production that supports DVD-Audio class streams (8 channels at 24 bit 192 kHz). The chip that will eventually do this has more pins than the current part so I don't believe an economical upgrade is possible.

You should bear in mind you would also need the appropriate HDMI receiver parts too, which also aren't yet in volume production. It will be quite some time before AV amps with such HDMI receivers are available in the market in any quantity.

More to the point, the DVD-A quality of the DV79's analogue outputs is IMO best in its class, and includes comprehensive bass management etc, so the benefits of sending such audio down HDMI would not be very great if you were already using the player's 6 channel analogue outputs.

HTH.

So we have a while to wait before we see HDMI "upgrade" version of the Arcam FMJ AV8 then?
