I know this is probably a really daft question! Output when playing DVDs shows large black bands at top and bottom of screen, surely these should disappear when viewing with a widescreen TV?? I'm using the HDMI link to a TX32LXD500 panasonic LCD. Setup on DV79 and TV set to 16:9.

16:9 isn't the only widescreen aspect ratio. In fact very few films are made to fit a 16:9 aspect ratio. There are a huge number of different ratios so you'll either have to get used to the bars or you could zoom the picture so you don't get the bars.
