I am still undecided on which DVD player to get  but have also started to throw getting a scaler into the mix just to confuse myself even further and empty my pockets even further. :suicide:

Just after people's thoughts on which would be a better way of spending my dosh. To get one of DV79, 3910 or 868 and a scaler (budget up to £1k) or get a DV29 and save a few quid (until no doubt blowing it later on next year on more kit to fill the room with!)

    Any thoughts?

I know this isnt any help, but why would you need to buy a scaler if for example the 868 can already scale to 720p and 1080i?

Is it just a quality issue?

Because an off board scaler will blow internal scaling out the window. What sort of display are you driving mate? :)

If you are planning on getting a scaler at some point then I would look into a DVD player that can output interlaced signals via it's HDMI port - I think the 868 can as can the dv29, not sure about the dv79 and the Denon can't.

If you go for the Denon think about maybe getting it SDI moddifed when you do get your scaler as this should give the best results and also by-passes all the HDCP encryption problems too...though you're cocvered with the 504 for HDCP anyway.

All that said the 504HDE is not best suited to running with a scaler as you have to use it's HDMI input which will only allow video resolutions so the best you could feed it would be 720p meaning the panel still has to scale to the 1280x768.

Joe thinks that a scaler on the 504 still makes a big difference though but the goal is to get the native resolution of the panel thus by-passing it's deinterlacer and scaler.

    It's never easy.

I would seriously look at the Panasonic SDI modded machines as they are one of the few machines with a chroma bug free MPEG decoder  Have seen one of these through a Crystalio, looked awsome :smashin:

I've got a post about scalers in the scaler section and one of the responses indicated that the DV79 could output interlaced via HDMI.

Any chance of expanding on that? Why 720p and not higher? :smashin:

I found I was in a mostly similar situation to yourself recently and have decided to go with the Lumagen HDP SDI (from Joe Fernand - top bloke to deal with). This will be fed by my Arcam DV88P which will be SDI modified thus negating the need for me to buy a new DVD - the same models you mentioned were on my short list. Waiting for the kit to arrive.

I chose the scaler and SDI option for several reasons:

    1. My 43MXE-1 cannot do HDCP over DVI
    2. Picture quality
    3. Simultaneous output to a Sanyo Z3 and 43MXE via a DVI distribution amp
    4. Expandability - I can get my Sky + V1 SDI modified in the future
    5. Multiple use - I can input all my other video sources and expect an improvement in picture quality

An older Arcam DVD with SDI or one of the Panasonic SDI might be an option to keep within your budget and get the HDP SDI model.

As far as I know the HDMI input on the 504HDE will not accept 768p or 1280x768 - the native resolution of the panel - and the goal with any scaler/display combo is to feed the display it's native resolution otherwise you are not getting the best from it.

The 504HDE also does not have the FRC (Frame Rate Conversion) features of the MXE1 so even if it did accept 1280x768 it would not work at 50Hz or 60Hz...everything would be converted to 70Hz internally which would result in tearing.

Gefen 4:1 but there is flexibility with Joe as to what I end up with as the best solution.

Forgive my ignorance, but what is a DVI DA?

It's a DVI Distribution Amplifier otherwise known as a splitter.

So you can take the DVI output from say a Lumagen scaler and feed it to both a DVI equipped plasma and a DVI equipped projector thus making the cabling simpler whilst maintaining a high quality signal without any degradation.

You can then configure the memory settings on the Lumagen for both the plasma and projector and switch between the two as required...making for a very neat solution.

    Cheers, Lee

Heard Denon are bringing out a new DVD A11 so you might want to wait for that to arrive.
