I was recently contacted by a forum member who saw my Pioneer/xbox hybrid SEE HERE http://www.avforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=317813 and asked me to do a custom xbmc mediacentre that would fit in with his other AV gear and not look so ugly or make as much noise,so i took the challange...knowing that the dv717 is an ideal donor case i advised him to get one.

The project details will be as follows.

Built in wireless controllers x2 with status leds.
built in DVD remote eye for ease of use on XBMC
    2x Silent fans 80mm
    300gb HDD
    HDTV output/support
(if time i will add 2x USB ports for keyboard and mouse support)
XBMC as main dash to allow streaming from pc or NAS.

Pics will follow the progress so that you can see how im getting on!

    DAY1

Its arrived (minus one of the feet!!) say goodbye to the ugly XBOX!!

Time to open her up i think!

Thanks for looking in.watch this space!!

    DAY2/3

    Stripped out the 717 case.......

theres loads of room in there!!!

Got to get the back of the dvdrom bracket cut off to allow the M/B to sit in place......

also the bottom of the case has pressed ot "bobbles" they wil need to be grinded off aswell...let the sparks fly....

Stripped out the Xbox Aswell, removed the bezel from the 717 and will fit it to the xbox DVDrom tray...........

Remember people always backup the HDD !!! Softmodded already to save time later!!!

Inside of the xbox.now stripped all controller ports and PSU removed, going to have to extend the PSU wires to about 12" to allow for the final placement.

Well so far so good folks now the fun really starts :rotfl: :rotfl:

    DAY 4

Hit a snag:mad: all xbox dvdroms arent equal so it seems.there a HUGE!! LUMP underneath this Phillips drive!! which means it sits too high, major rethink!!

    see what i mean!!

It covers the internal motor so it will be really tight

I might be able to cut it off (more grinding!!) but still unure if i will be able to use it.

Jon,you cannot just use any dvdrom, that would just be too easy:) the xbox has a specific type. You can use certain PC ones though.

    Triple,
Iam going to get it cut today,so fingers crossed the motor dont hit anything in the case.

    Cheers

    DAY 5

Well after a lot of measuring, cutting and grinding i think the dvdrom will be okay:smashin: Had to make some drastic alteration to it.....

As you can see Major modifying!!.....why did i say yes to this !!! :rotfl:

also grinded the bottom 'humps' off the case so he motherboard can sit flush

and the back of the dvd bracket had to go!!

While i was waiting for the grider to cool down :D i extended the PSU wires as you can see they have been lenghtened by 12" to allow for final placement.

    Getting somewhere now!!
I layed out a rough plan of where the motherboard will sit, tried the dvd and it JUST clears the resistors on the motherboard!!!

well that most of the boring stuff done i think,:D just a case of mounting all the bits and getting that bloody dvdrom working!!

Still waiting for the wireless controllers to show up,but i will be getting on with replacing the LEDS in the case and getting the power/eject board wired up to the case buttons.

    Thanks for looking,next update soon.......

    DAY 6/7

Well after all that talk saying the DVDROM would fit ...it didnt!!

I couldnt beleive it,when you 'eject' the lens underneath drops down about 10mm causing the dvdrom to jam!!!

I had to drastically cut the dvd rom bracket out to allow for the Lens movement...not the neatest cutting but you dont see it...

Finally got the dvd rom sorted!! ejects fine added the Bezel from the DV717 to the front of the xbox dvdrom, had to slice the lip off the 717 dvdrom tray so that the bezel can be removed at any time, and then glued it to the xbox dvdrom..

Also fixed the drive into place with some hommade brackets, the crucial bit being the height so that the tray operates smoothly.

motherboard has also been mounted into place, but my camera has run flat!...no piccy im afraid...so not too bad a weekend reallly, still have alot of soldering to do,also made a start on the smoked windows for the controller sensors!!

    Thanks for looking!!

    DAY 7/8

Had a bit of a break over the last few day still waiting on the wireless controllers to arrive,as promised heres the latest installment in this project for those who are taking an interest, thank you its getting a few views now but NOT MANY COMMENTS !!!Come on dont be shy!!:D it also makes me feel this is a worth while task..

    Motherboard mounted!!

Really easy to do that bit:D

Also made a start on the 'windows' that will hide the RF Receivers!...i know theres a big window already on the front but theres a good reason for using the STOP and PLAY Buttons which will become clear further on in the project!!

Not very clear but it looks really good!!

Done most of the soldering that i could,i have wired up the P/E board to the buttons on the case, tidyed up the wiring a bit, just waiting for the controllers and i will be able to mount them and extend the receivers!!

Really starting to take shape now,a few cable ties help alot!!

Case eject and main power button all working fine,so i made a start on changing the DV717 leds to blue........

The three Leds that are left will be status indicators for the wireless controllers!!!

Well thanks until next time i hope you are all enjoying this thread!!

Wouldn't mind a few wiring diagrams for some of the wiring, i've got a spare xbox lying around. I'm getting the itch again, mind you i've still got my son's pc to finish and a couple of mini-itx boards i wan't to mess about with, plus i've promised i'll build her indoors' dad a more up to date PC to use a digital camera on. I'd still like the diagrams, i might do it alongside when i get around to rebuilding the old Suzuki 500 i've got in a hundred bits in the shed
I'm really enjoying the build BTW. :smashin:

    OK - contentious point here.

I realise this is an interesting little exercise here, but I am struggling to see the point of it.
The xbox technology is well out of date now. As I have found out you can add to its life a little by turning it into an XBMC.
But if you are going to go to all this trouble with the end game of providing an gaming machine in a Pioneer shell, then why not load PC internals into the box and turn it into a true media centre with if necessary an xbox emulator.

I hope you don't charge by the hour btw.

I think the point here is the xbox may well be 'old hat' be will still be the cheapest option when it comes to a media player/server.
A pc could be put in there very easily, but not at that price.. £50.00 for a xbox £200-300 for a pc.

Once you add XBMC it becomes so much more than a games machine,my own project was built as just a media/storage/streaming device with the added bonus of being able to play 1000's of mame/emulators.The xbox is one ugly lump which is also noisy as hell, but put it in a nice case add a few silent fans and you have a bit of kit you would be hard pushed to buy at the price.

The forum member who has asked me to do this has the same idea,it mixes in with your other AV eqipment, and when your running this through your plasma with all your MP3's sorted by album covers aswell as your tv/movie rips the 'WOW' factor still to this day has friends asking "will you do mine?".

    Lei

    ps.
In all honesty it has not been that labour intensive,in total maybe only 3hrs so far!

Will be away tonight but i will update with new pics soon...

Quick question, does anybody know of a way to make a really clean 80mm hole in the rear of the case for the fan?

I used a jewellers saw to do mine but it took ages:eek:

If you were doing a lot then these are great - I used a 30mm one for a Arcade Cabinet control panel - really easy to use and a great clean hole. The 30mm ones are about £7 though not £90!!

Hi all, been away for a few days,i havent forgot this thread,:D

Well almost done really, just waiting for a few 80mm fans to arrive, had a right time with extending the controller 'connect' switches, for some reason they would not work when i extended the wiring....really weird, but i think i have it sorted now.

I have a few pics of it up and running, and others of the logitech receivers i will post them as soon as i have chance.I'd say its 95% done, just the rear holes to cut and mount the fans and HDD.

    Keep you updated!
