I have a Sony DSR10VP digital VCR. My new motherboard has firewire ports built in so I decided to have a go at grabbing DV without using any fancy dedicated capture cards. Just connected the vcr to the firewire, booted xp, switched the vcr on which windows then detected, then used the XP windows movie maker software to grab some DV. All goes ok until I try to save the avi out, it insists on using WMV format or AVI with the dvsd codec. Neither of these can be loaded into Virtualdub for format conversion. Can someone give a novice like me a step by step guide as to how to end up with an avi I can load into VDub to tinker with and convert to DivX? Preferably using freeware.
