On the whole DTS is said to be better it uses a more efficient compression method and can thus store more data

If I was you mate, I'd use the search facility at the top of the page...just type in Dolby Digital dts (which is also 5.1 BTW...) and you'll come up with loads.
The best of which are here

DTS is said to be better but it depends on the Disc i've heard 5.1 mixes that sound better than DTS ones but as a general rule the DTS ones tend to be better, I'd go for a DTS system as it will be able to play 5.1 discs as well.

I wish everyone would stop calling Dolby Digital 5.1, DD is DD, DTS is DTS, 5.1 is 5 speakers and a sub whether in DD or DTS. ;)

A good example is U-571, the DD soundtrack on the D-Theater release is one of the best soundtracks I have heard, it beats the DTS soundtrack on the dvd hands down and that is one of the best DTS soundtracks available.

If done correctly then yeah DTS should be better but there are just too many things that can **** this theory up.

dts is generally louder which is why people think it sounds better. as gizalroc said both dts and dd are 5.1 sounds. you can also get 6.1 and 7.1 effects as well with thx movies and enough speakers. :)

i'm sure 6.1 and 7.1 are available on more than just THX releases.
DTS is of a higher bitrate so sound quality in comparison is like the difference in bitrates in mp3 etc.
Even if it is louder then surely that doesn't trick people i set the volume to the level i want it at so if DTS came through louder i'd turn it down!
However as already stated there are some crap DTS mixes about and some excellent DD ones.

What about SDDS , sony dynamic digital sound , have heard this a few times in the larger screen in my local UCI cinema. Will this ever be avalabil for the home cinema market?

I also agree that DTS is better than dolby digital (ac3 to all the laser disc owners :D )

For me there's no question. DTS is far superior. Whenever there's a DTS track i choose it, DD sounds flat in comparison. The Kill Bill Vol1 DTS Track is Great! I Wish The Matrix Trilogy had a DTS Track, Maybe in the ultimate box set due in Dec!
