    Hi folks,

Denon newbie here. I'm on my second DHT500 now after suffering the "protection" message in the first month of ownership. Despite this I still know this is a great system, but I'm a bit wet behind the ears regarding the DTS ES setup?

Can I enjoy an DTS ES movie like "Blade III" for instance with just the speakers that came with the system? or do you need more than the sub, centre, x2 fronts and x2 backs?

    thanks

    Dave

It depends, is it 5.1 ES or 6.1 ES. Regardless your system will downmix to 5.1.
For 5.1 ES it is just 5.1 with information on the disc to help with the mixing for additonal channels. the 6.1 ES has discrete channels for additional speakers.

You'll need an extra speaker to hear DTS ES Discrete in all it's glory.

Regular satellite, ideally the same as all the other speakers. :)

I suggest tou also lok for a active sub. This way you get rid of the existing on then re-assign that output for the 6th channel. you want a sub rated at about 100W

okay thanks, I'll have a look, seems a shame that the new denon sub will become redundant?

Yeah, but it is a sold as a 5.1 in a box, it can be expanded to 6 or 7.1 but it will down mix 6.1 to 5.1 so you wil not lose any audio. But 6.1 playing a 6.1 track would sound better.
