Hi,

I have a denon 3801 and recently bought the R2 DTS-ES version of Gladiator, when watching how do you know your listening in DTS-ES as id dous not say on the amps display. I have made sure my dvd player is switched to DTS and the disc is playing the DTS version. The amp will say Direct,am i the assume that this is ok and that the amp has picked up a flag from the disc or should the display say some other thing? I have seen pictures of the Denons big brothers displays reading discreet 6.1 when playing capable software.
Please point me in the right direction if you can help as im a little confused,
thank you, John.

Sorry, can't help with the main point of your question, but bear in mind that the R2 Gladiator is, I think, ES-matrix, not ES-discrete (R1 is discrete).

From DVD Compare "One minor difference is that the Region 1 version has the 6.1 extension for DTS" Well it may be minor for them but if you have a DTS-ES Discrete 6.1 amp it's not so minor!

My AVC-A1SE says "DTS ES DSCRT6.1" when playing DTS-ES Discrete 6.1 encoded discs such as the R1 copy of Gladiator.

Check here at DTS DVD's under the UK for R2, DTS-ES Discrete 6.1 encoded discs. I've just checked and it used to say "**DTS-ES 6.1 Discrete Surround" but unfortunately the ** don't seem to appear against any UK discs. Can this really be correct? You'll just have to go multi-region I'm afraid!

    Regards

"Direct" means the amp isn't decoding anything, in effect, you're getting stereo.

The amp should automatically switch to Dolby / DTS when it receives a Dolby / DTS signal. Press the "Auto" button on the front of the amp to make sure it does.

To ensure you hear the EX / ES channel on suitably encoded material (provided you have the extra set of rear speakers to play the surround back channel), press the button on the remote labelled "6.1/7.1 surround", the display on the amp should read "SB: ON".

This means that when you're listening to non-ES/EX material, the surround back channel will duplicate the surround left & right channels, and with EX/ES material the surround back channel will be reproduced.

Of course, everything in my reply is covered in the manual, worth a read you know....

This is true I'm afraid. The R1 versions of SE7EN, GLADIATOR and CHICKEN RUN are all in DTS ES Discrete while the R2 versions are all in the matrix flavour. Third world AV country again then.

The amp will only auto select DD or DTS if it's already in the pro-logic mode.
