What are the best DVDs to show off these new surround sound standards?

Details of which chapters are best would also be nice!

I finished setting my back rears with just enough time to watch Gladiator (skipping through some of the boring bits).

Wow it's totally different, the fight scenes are really awesome. There is a bit in the first gladiator fight where a fighter swings a weapon above his head. You can really hear it above your head! I listened to the first half in normal DTS 6.1 discrete and the 2nd half in THX EX mode. I must say that THX EX sounded better to me.

Does anyone know if the THX EX mode while playing a DTS 6.1 discrete DVD affects the discrete channel? (not discrete anymore) If it does it doesn't seem to adversly affect the sound, as I said, it sounded better to me.

Said this elsewhere, but the part in Fight Club where the plane blows out is awesome and I'm sure you're going to get some recommendations for the THX intro on T2 ult ed.

Nobody here's interested in subtlety where rear effects are concerned so I'm not going to mention any of my other favourite sounding discs [IMG]

Se7en 2-disc set is DD-EX DTS 6.1ES,subtle most of the time, but has a few outstanding moments.

The Haunting DTS 6.1ES Version. The acting may be sh*te,but that soundtrack will scare you Sh*tless! And a bass extension that is just wicked.

T-2 DTS ES soundtrack!Well do i need to say anymore?

Fight Club DD-EX as mentioned above.

Chicken Run DTS-ES is a more subtle and assured track.

And Gladiator DTS-ES is just amazing!!!

Perfect Storm DD-EX, bit disapointing until the storm starts. The actual film is crap!!

There are more, but i haven't listened to them yet.

For me i would say DTS-ES is the more dynamic option, but that doesn't mean Dolby is not effective, just i feel the DTS soundtracks on most DVDs are more dynamic and lifelike. And that bass extension is hard to beat,Dolby bass sounds wooly in comparison, just my humble opinion, listen to the above and be amazed!!!!!!!! I thought it was strange, all Dolby Digital stuff comes up as surround 6.1 or THX surround EX. Why is that? So how can the tell a genuine EX DVD then?

    Jeff,

Once I know what amp your using I'll let you know what's going on....

Bugs Life doesn't have an EX soundtrack.

(It's a DD EX 'flag' thing)

I have the Denon AVC-A1SE. I have the same problem with DTS stuff. Gladiator comes up as DTS ES 6.1 discrete and T2 comes up as DTS ES Matrix 6.1, but Small soldiers (DTS 5.1) also comes up as DTS ES Matrix 6.1. Its not a problem sound wise, but it would be nice to get the reassurance that the amp has correctly recognised the sound format. Maybe there is no way the amp can tell. What does the AX1 come up with?

on AX-1 [with ES/6.1 set to auto]

    Gladiator is detected as :-
    DTS ES [DTS selected]
    DD Matrix 6.1 [DD selected]

A Bugs Life is seen as Matrix 6.1

    Does Gladiator R2 DTS-ES also?
