    Hi all
i'm still unsure which AV32R surround format is the right choice if a music DVD-V has an DTS track, like the Eagles DVD - hell freezes over.
Should i select, after the DTS symbol is display on the diplay/screen, DTS Music or not?

    Many thanks for your help!
    Regards
    Daniel

DTS Music is primarily for *very* old DTS mixes and some DTS CD's. The eagles DVD should use straight DTS.

Movie formats have +10dB of headroom allocated on the LFE channel and your system is calibrated assuming this. Old DTS recordings were mixed where they had no headroom on the LFE channel and assumed 0dBFS in = 0dB out. As a movie system is calibrated assuming 0dBFS = +10dB out, something had to be done otherwise the LFE channel will be 10dB too loud. When in DTS Music mode 10dB is subtracted from the LFE channel hence now giving the correct in-room levels.

Around 1999 and before. I'm sure there are a few exception cases out there, but the move to have a common LFE level on DTS seemed to be in place in 2001, as DTS tidied up their specifications and were suggesting that DTS music mode was no longer required...

The Eagles DVD should indeed be straight DTS and very nice it sounds too.... I've not found a DVD that needs DTS music....

Eagles DVD is the best example how NOT to mix music DVD. Do you really like guitars from behind???
Everyone who likes it has either weird taste or did not give it a real listen! (IMHO)

Sorry mate but that's :censored: , the region 1 original release had a good DTS track....... The surrounds gave just enough ambience to re-create the actual show (I know as I went to the MTV show!)....... Personal taste is something else but it does sound like the real show......

Note that the Eagles DVD is a DTS 5.0 recording (R1 & R2 versions) and thus the debate over DTS or DTS Music on this title is not relevant as there is no .1 LFE track.

I have a few DTS CD's and these all require DTS Music mode to be engaged. Never noticed it being needed on any DTS DVD's though.

Thanks Daniel, I'll get it on Saturday. Grüsse in die Schweiz!

Correct, and it was good show indeed, but the moment when I heard guitar coming from left surround speaker it was over for me. Tastes, as you say!

    Hi Steve1056.
Are you sure mate on the Eagles disk soundtrack.....The incoming data stream on my copy has 5.1.....The TAG unit agrees as well......I also didn't think the DTS spec included a 5.0 senario....
I'm curious how you know your missing the .1..?

The reverb around the room was pretty special which is why many use it as a test disk, when the orchestra kicked in that also bounced off the walls and gave a real feeling of ambience. I'm not suggesting that you have set your rears too loud but it is that reverb around the room that I look for in a nice setup (it shouldn't be too distracting).

No I did not, I heard those guitars in quite a few setups and demos.

But if it was sounding like that live (you were there), then (only then) you're right :D

    Graham

Were you involved in the absolutely terriffic Gillain Welch concert currently on BBC FOUR? Superbly filmed and recorded in St.Like's church inDD2.0 which I've got into PLII on my AV32R. Great sounds from two acoustic guitars and two singers with no egos in the way like the Eagles concert ;)

Missed the first 5 mins or so but it's on again at 3.05am so I'm gonna record it onto my Sky+ hard disk and then burn to DVD+R.

I'm sure that you'd love it Miron :)

    Graham,

You're right, it does flag up as 5.1. I could have sworn it was 5.0, but there you go.

However, DTS 5.0 tracks do exist on a number of music DVD's, e.g. Roxy Music Live At The Apollo, The Corrs Live In London, Heart Alive In Seattle, etc, so I guess the spec allows it. :)

    Cheers,
    Steve

The soundstage where it was filmed had some odd placed brick columns which bounced the orchestra around a fair bit.....

    Hi Kenny.

No mate it wasn't us, I also think you might find that it wasn't recorded in DD2.0 (it was far better than that!), but it was just broadcast in it.... "Ego's" certainly agree there mate, spoilt the Earls Court performance in my view.....

Just wait until you hear the R2 Rod Stewart concert at Abbey Road that we all went to on Friday night (Dec 18th I think), wonderful stuff, should be a good mix even though you will hear us all singing along to "Reason to believe".... :D

    Hey Daniel,
finally got some time today and immediately went to get this disk.

It is purely sensational! Thanks for the great tip!
OK it is different music than Eagles (I do not think I will ever like that recording) but old JMJ really knows how to make atmosphere. And it is beautiful disk to check tonal ballance of all 5 speakers (must say I was very happy with the sound). I really enjoyed it last few hours. I will leave it in the player for some time. Now all I need is my DVD32R to come back (yes mine is at IAG too, before someone asks).

Unfortunately no rock band ("her mit den gitarren") managed to do something like this yet. (Cum'on Pink Floyd, make just one more)....

    Regards to the Schwitz!
    Miron

P.S: I see one problem coming: I still use your file for ProntoNG. In few weeks I will be getting colour version, so I'll have to do something on my own. Are you sure you won't to do one colour file, just for fun :)

    Hello Miron, Graham,

    To the Pronto:
I already have an fulltime job(fortunately), but if you have my prontofile simply rename it to name.zip and extract all the bitmaps,
they should be in color. :D

    To good music(my opinion):
You should listen to the new Peter Gabriel DVD "PLAY". Some information about the DVD(released on: Mon 25 Oct 2004): Featuring 23 videos, with fully restored visuals and amazing new 5.1 mixes by Peter and Daniel Lanois, and extras including three bonus videos (also with full 5.1 surround mixes). The 5.1 mixes are presented for the first time in a DTS format that is at full 24bit/96khz surround for the ultimate audiophile experience. In addition, Dolby 5.1 and Dolby Stereo soundtracks are provided for those of us without the latest and greatest equipment(like an AV32R-DP :) ).

    Regards
    Daniel

Going for Gabriel then. Your tips always prove to be pretty useful ... Thanks mate!

By the way (back to Jarre), as much as his 5.1 mix is gorgeous his CD is too experimental for me. Poor people convicted to use headphones on that ;)

    Regards
Miron (off for few weeks ...)

Which version of Aero have you gone for the cd with 5.1 dts or the DVD_audio version (This doesnt seem such a good option with the DVD32r?)

It was the CD + DVD-V version. The DVD32R cannot play DVD-A tracks but will play DD or DTS tracks from DVD-V discs.
