Just got my first iPhone 3G 8Gb yesterday.
Disaster only 3 hours after registering when It slipped out of my shirt pocket into the bath!
I grabbed it out immediately and after shaking it and removing the SIM card Googled for a solution!
I wrapped it in a towel and put it on the radiator, overnight in the airing cupboard.
Today I've returned the SIM card and plugged it into mains.
The display looks fine with no mottling behind the screen.
It received a call but the touch screen is not working so couldn't answer it. I can't slide the unlock tab across so whilst it may not be as damaged as it could have been, it is still unusable.

Any suggestions as to what it may be that's causing the touch screen prob and whether it is a hardware or software problem?
    Thanks chaps
    Paul

All i can really suggest is that you cross your fingers and hope that once its dried out it all works fine. Apple have moisture sensors in the device so they can check for water damage.

you may have to fess up and ask apple what the repair cost would be.

unless someone else has other ideas?

    Good luck

    Update.
Acting on advice from a friend, on the basis that the only thing that seems wrong is that the touch screen is not working, I hooked it up to iTunes and clicked restore to factory settings.
It seems to do that successfully and the screen has a picture of the USB connector pointing to iTunes.
When I plug it in to the laptop it says it can't do it as the phone is in recovery mode and I need to restore...which I have done several times!!

I would bring it back to an O2 store, and just say the touch screen has stopped working. 9/10 times they will replace it on the spot.

most phones have them - normally under the battery, they change colour if they get wet.

Yes the iphone has them in the headphone jack and the dock connector and I believe there is one inside also.

Make sure your headphone jack is dry when you plug it in as apparently this could be enough to set it off and invalidate the warranty!

The only one visible water sensor is in the headphone jack, it turns pink if wet. I dropped mine in a mug of tea, had the same problem. Dried it out, and this is where I cheated, white cotton wool off an earbud, dampen it. bed it down in the bottom of the headphone socket with the bare cotton bud.
I done that, took it to the Apple store, first thing they done was check the headphone jack, said no probs and replaced it.
