Question Drop ceiling and pelmets?

Hi All,

I've just ripped my lounge ceiling down, I wanted to lag some noisy pipes, put in some sort of insulation and run in cables for speakers (atmos set up, 2 in ceiling speakers).

Has anyone got a link to the best way of lowering the ceiling and building a pelmet for lighting please?

I've considered battoning across the joists to create a space to run the cables in and then boarding, then getting some rails for the pelmet which I'd like to house lighting and a drop screen/projector. Novice at this so any help or guidance would be appreciated, thanks.

Thanks Sea Eagle, here is a few pics.

The room itself it is 5.48m by 4.17m with window at one end as shown and the door in the corner that photo is taken from. The screen will be at the opposite end to the window.

Hey mate thanks for the pics. Firstly you mention you are going to install 2 ceiling speakers for Atmos. Well to start off, you really don't want to drop the ceiling too much as Atmos works better with a higher ceiling due to where they need to be placed and the most important thing for atmos is the separation from your surrounds. You don't want your atmos speakers close to your surrounds. What i mean by close is low. This will have an effect on your plan off attack otherwise it's pointess going to the trouble.A lot of people complain that they cant hear anything coming from thier atmos speakers and this is why. Your room is not that small but it's not big either so keep your atmos speakers as high as you can under YOUR circumstances. Run your batterns in the opposite direction to your joists at spacings of around 450mm apart and have an idea of where your ceiling speakers are going to go before hand. keep your surrounds low as you can also. From the pic with the window it looks as though you will have no trouble running your wires although if you want to insulate, which i think you should, i would use proper sound batts as that might save you some time and money lagging them pipes.(just a thought). Also use proper sound proof board on your ceiling as it will surprise you how much sound is kept in the room. Here is a link to get a quote and then you can go from there. By getting someone to come out to quote on your insulation would be ideal as you can ask all the questions you like. Too bad i am in Australia.:)

You can also make your own projector mount with some stainless steel chain like i did.
Movie Theatre and music room.

Thanks mate, that room is impressive - shame mine has to be a living room as well as a cinema room, so I won't get that full effect you do.

I'll take a look into getting a quote and some sound batts - how do they work with pipework and cables? I've a lot of pipes that have been put in and are quite tight to the floor of the room above, which is fully decorated now and so cannot be ripped up (for a while yet). I think I've managed to lag the worst of them, but do you cut the batts around the pipes to try and stop movement?

I'll take on board the in ceilings, maybe just use minimal batons at right angles to the joists for the soundproof board to go up once I get there, it is a lot to think about at the moment but great to get such good advice on here.
