4.5mb link can theoretically max out at around ~550KB/s but in practice they never do that much (overheads, latency).

Also the cheaper ISPs tend to oversell their bandwidth which means you may only get a fraction of that when it's busy.

On you PC go to www.speedtest.net, this gives a handy indication of download and upload speeds in a nice graphical wrapper.

Probably a bit difficult on the PS3, although maybe through the web browser, I've not tried.

You SHOULD actually see speeds of 450 kb/s ON GOOD SITES (Sites with good servers, like Microsoft).

I doubt that'd work on a PS3... Even the very simple http://sod.ms/fast didn't work for me.

Edit: tried it.. it kinda works but is slow as mollasses. It underrated my link by quite a bit (reckoned about 5.5meg, where it's 8mb and a good speedtester will generally read it as a little over 7mb).

heh. You've never tried to pull a DVD ISO off MSDN then.

MS tends to get overloaded a lot. Good sites would be things like the UK mirror service.

Don't forget that if using a wireless connection, you'll also most likely lose a lot of speed there as well. Best way to go is hard-wired...

PS3 seems reasonably OK speed wise to me. Stuff comes down in a few minutes, but I haven't gone to the trouble of timing it. The longest I've had was the MGS demo that's about 800mb and that didn't take too long.

OTOH I never use wireless for something that isn't moving around - easier to just plug it into one of the switches that litter this place.
