Well not quite, at least not yet:)

Anyway, circumstances may dictate that I downgrade my AV system in the near future, and to get ahead of the game I was beginning to think of some options.

I'd be looking to spend around £1300, and I'd also be going down the 2nd hand route.

Equipment that I'd need are an amp, speakers and DVD player.

I'd retain my Z1 for projection, and one of my Servo 15s for subwoofer duties (or possibly downgrade to a REL Storm and sell both of them).

So the question is, what would the 2nd hand options be?

I have no idea on speaker packages, but this is probably dictated by the amp that I choose (i.e I'd love to keep my Celestions but being tough buggers to drive would rule that out).

So starting with the amp, looking @ £500 max, what's the best options for 5.1? Denon A10se? Older Denon A1D? Yamaha AX1? Or a Pioneer of some description?

Alternatively I could potentially look at a cheap processor and an older Rotel power amp, but could I get anything for £500? (for both).

Leading on from that comes the speakers, ideally I'd be looking for standmounts or even floorstanders (for the fronts), and unless I go for the pre/power combo I've got to be looking at reasonably easy to drive speakers. Again £500 for all 5 would be the aim, and it's here I get really lost.:( My recent experience has only been M&K and Celestion...I like both neutral and warmer sounds, but not a sound that's too coloured like Missions usually do.

    Any views?

As for DVD players, well I might just get my old Skyworth back:laugh: . If not then I'll be looking @ approx a £200-£300 2nd hand PAL progressive machine: I'm not too bothered about this for now as DVD player prices seem to move quite a bit.

    Any advice would be appreciated:)

    Cheers
    Matt

I'd definitely recommend you keep hold of a Servo Matt, imagine having to go without it... ;).

I don't think you'll get a Pre/Power combo for £500 that's respectable. An A10SE would make sense, but you'd have to at a POA-T10 for the EX channels, which would eat up most of your budget.

You'd be better off getting speakers which are easy-ish to drive and buying a newer receiver IMHO, you'll benefit from the processing and features counts. A Denon 3803 makes sense, if you want THX then a Pioneer 2011 in the S/H arena might be better (has the better quality poweramp channels too).

Speakers, a more difficult choice. B&W's DM600 S3 series springs to mind, as do the Acoustic Energy Aegis Evo's (if it helps, Currys, at least my local store, are selling them at ludicrously low prices, £149 for the Evo 3 floorstanders). In the second hand arena - hell, Mission's 77 series are easy to drive .

DVD players, I can't really think of anything off the top of my head. Philip's 963SA perhaps.

    Hi Matt,

Perhaps a bit cheeky, but have you considered Acoustic Energy Aegis for speakers? I have got a pair of 3's and centre up for sale. I think you'd really like the sound. I wouldn't have put them up for sale but my 15 month year old daughter dictates that it really is not safe to have floor standers in the house....
In addition I have also got some Aegis compacts that I used for the rears which made up a really nice setup. I am only getting rid of those as I now will have MA 180's all around....Don't really like mixing the 'sound' of different speakers. The acoustic energy's are all at 91dB sensitivity...
Alternatively I have purchased a set of Monitor Audio Radius 180 speakers with which I am really, and I mean really impressed. That may be a suggestion, though perhaps difficult to source second hand and pushing your budget when new. Although they are classed as Sat's the 180's are larger than the more common referred to 90's and go slightly deeper to 60Hz. Your Servo is more than capable of providing the rest...
Amp wise, I would also consider the Sony STR-VA555ES. Compared to the others you mentioned it is a bit more modern, has got PLII, EX and ES with 6 channel amplification. I think the general opinion is that it is a really good sounding amp even in stereo. Great with the Aegis 3's ;-) I bought mine secondhand for £340 and I have seen them ex-dem for around £500.

    Good luck!

Actually Matt, if you want me to get hold of some of those speakers for you I could. I have a friend who works at curries so you'd get a further discount, I could 'hold' them for you ETC.

    Just a thought...

Matt TBH you don't need 2 servos in that room, one will suffice and i think you should keep atleast one mate. I am interested in one btw ;)-depending on what my next move is.

real shame you have to downgrade though, your system is truly awesome

 - Are you saying that because you've had experience of comparing one servo with two in matt's room, or because you just want to take one off his hands? ;)

well a bit of both ;) but if matt needs too sell his kit the least sacrifice he would have to take is to loose one of the subs.

Saving for a house this year, need to get on the property ladder, and constantly buying AV gear doesn't help;) Not only that but any place I buy will entail me having neighbours, so having higher-end kit will simply be a waste. And 2 servos will DEFINATELY be a waste when volume becomes an issue....:D

Fred - 2 servos offers me clear benefits over one, I can assure you, although one will suffice;)

Dejong, thx for your offer, like I say this is not an immediate thing:)

Does anyone have any experience of some of the older Rotel processors? I think I've seen them go cheap on the 2nd hand market?

RSP-966 processors tend to hover around the £200-300 mark. I haven't had experience with them but people on the forums have said they're pretty respectable. Might be worth considering.

That is a very low price, explains why I am not getting any interest in my speakers! Thanks for the tip Dimmy! That price for a pair of EVO's nobody can go wrong....

Matt, I understand you are in no rush but at that price if I was you I would seriously consider selling one of your Servo's and get four 3's with money to spare for a centre....Put the £500 towards the amp and you can should be able to get a pre-power combination will be great with those speakers and a single Servo....

WOW Dimmy! that's £200 cheaper than I saw them last time in Currys which was only a couple of months ago.

Was that in the sale or do you think that's their standard price?

At that price they would make brilliant front AND surrounds. That must rank alongside the Servo15 as the next bargain of the year. Will have to check my local store now.

It's a sale price I reckon. It wasn't that price just a few weeks pre-christmas when I went into the store. And yes, it is a ridiculously low price.

Again, if anybody can't get hold of them at their own store, I'm quite willing to ask my friend Chris to utilise his staff discount & 'Hold' a couple of pairs for people who want them. Have to ask in store with regards to availability first though.

Gonna fly past Currys tonight on my way home just to see.

Can you ask your mate if they can get hold of any of the other speakers in their range or just the floorstanders.

    Cheers

They have the AE Evo 1s right next to it, but I forgot to check their price.

They don't have the Centre speaker unfortunately.

To be honest, I don't have any regrets whatsoever, I always bought the majority of my kit in the knowledge that I'd have to sell it all at some point.

I'm just toying with ideas at the moment, although it's probably better to get money in the bank earning interest;):)

Smurfin, yet another vote of sympathy. We bought our first house at 29yo, my home cinema wasn't worth enough so I sold my new Saab Convertible and to date I am still driving in an 15 year old car....

Cheap progressive player? Try a Yamaha DVD S540 - can be had for about £120. I was surprised by just how good they are.

Hi dimmy, I'm wondering if I could take up your offer on 'holding some speakers' for me? :D My local store (Teeside) had what appeared to be a battered pair with a knackered tweeter for ..£280!

What would I have to do to get them to 'realise' the national price?
