Hi, Trying to replace the door furniture in my house - all but two of the door latches are a standard size but the two fitted on a loft conversion done about 10 years ago are odd sizes. There is no reason for them to be a non-standard size, maybe it was what the builder had on him. This is what I mean by door latch I first had to overcome the weird concept that these are specified by the total length (which I think is largely irrelevant) rather than the distance from faceplace to the centre of the square hole that the spindle goes through (the backset, I believe it is called). Anyway, once I had got my head round that I have come to the conclusion that the ones I have are non-standard. From faceplate to end = 95mm From faceplate to centre of square hole (backset) = 76mm I need same size replacements because of the holes in the doors. One of the doors is a bathroom - the builder never fitted a lock so I'd like to change that to a handle with a thumb-lock so I'll need a bathroom latch/lock that has a 76mm backrest too. Any idea where I might find such latches. Cheers, Nigel P.S. The annoying thing when googling is that one of the standard sizes is 76mm total length with a 57mm backset so all my searches are hitting those.

Yes that is the one - have managed to find it in a few places. So that sorts out the main door. But have yet to find a bathroom lock with a 76mm backset or even a separate mortice lock with a 76mm backset. Annoying that Legge seem to have created a standard all of their own - if the builders had used any other make I would have been fine. Cheers, Nigel
Unfortunately, this is the madness that is door latches. 76mm is an industry standard size but unfortunately it refers to the full inserted length (ooh err missus) of the latch, not the distance to the backset (that the spindle goes through). So in this case the backset will be 57mm. Cheers, Nigel
Wish that was the case but in one of the Q&As for the for bathroom lock the Screwfix reply is And on the info page for the door latch Cheers, Nigel
I assume by that you mean a handle that just uses a normal single sprung latch but has an in-built lock to stop which prevents the handle from being turned. No problem with that in principle but we didn't see any when we were looking. Also we are buying 18 sets so want them all to match, be of a style that my wife approves of, same size or bigger than existing so that existing holes, marks and indents are hidden, and be of a reasonable price. Cheers, Nigel
Thanks, the 95mm would work but this is just the door latch - have already sourced this (see above). It is a 76mm backset bathroom mortice lock, either separate or combined with a door latch that I am short of. Cheers, Nigel
Okay will look at their ranges to see if they have any that fit our needs. I need 18 in total - do they sell to the public. Cheers, Nigel
I don’t know if they sell to the public or not. Just do a search for privacy handles, plenty of places should sell them John..
How do these privacy door handles work. I ask because most of my searches are returning handles that have two spindles, one for the latch and one for the thumb turn. So does this mean that the thumb turn needs to operate a motice bolt or is the spindle there just to enable it to be opened from the outside if need be. I get the impression that a lot of sellers are just using the word privacy to mean lock. Cheers, Nigel
Thanks, the problem I am finding is that many advertised as privacy locks need a bathroom lock. But you have to do a fair bit is digging. Guess I need to find some that are wife friendly. Bit tail wagging the dog choosing the style for the whole house based on one awkward door. Maybe I just live with an old fashioned bolt. Cheers, Nigel
