With the US release of Doom 3 pretty much confirmed for August 3rd and strong indications that the Euro release won't be until at least the 13th August I've decided to import the US version.

So can anyone recommend a reasonably fast, reasonably good value US supplier of PC softwarre? I know of DVDBoxoffice but they can be a little slow, Amazon's shipping charges are a little excessive and they're also not the speediest in my experience. Has anyone anyexperience of shipping times from www.videogamesplus.com ?

    Thanks

    Mike

I ordered a couple of wavebirds from videogamesplus (2 seperate occasions) and have to say the delivery was amazingly fast considering they are based in Canada (was easlily less than 1 week). Great service too, I canceled an order with them once and they were really helpfull and friendly about it. I would recommend them :smashin:

That sounds like pretty good service, I'll use them. I'll be out of the country until August 8th so hopefully when I get back Doom3 should be waiting for me.

    Excellent.....

Yes. There is no region coding for PC games, the only thing you'll lose is access to UK tech support but meh...and sometimes, there are localized patches but I've never seen one from iD and besides a US patch is as easily downloadable as a UK one.

I'm looking forward to this more than any other FPS this year (Half-Life 2 and Halo 2 included), especially the very promising 1v1 and 2v2 deathmatches whose format has always wiped the floor with the tedious free for all type that is so common. WIth 1v1 there are no easy kills and no excuses, brutal but fair. The dynamic lighting, physics and pixel level hit detection should make this the duellists game of choice for many years. Single player looks scary too....

Seems id are happy to meet the so-called 'summer sales lull' head on. Let's hope Vivendi don't chicken out and put HL2 back to September.

All the titles you mentioned will sell by the shed load whenever they're released. I hope they're not gonna delay the release till the holiday season as I can't see that prompting anymore punters to buying the game than if it were released sooner:(

:) Finally. Looks like this'll be the year when when Half Life 2 and Doom 3 meet head on. Along with FarCry that's already out, I'm looking forward to spending some more time on my PC (if I can get it working again :( ).

Depends to a certain extent on which game you're talking about. Gabe Newell has announced the machine specs for HL2, a link can be found on the Megagames website, which includes minimum and recommended specs.

It has been previously reported that Doom3 has optimisations for nVidia hardware that will allow the game to run faster. Obviously this doesn't rule out ATI hardware in any way but I haven't seen minimum specs for this game as yet.

I'd say go for some more RAM (1GB) and possibly a better graphics card (Radeon 9700Pro).

No definitive min or rec specs have been published as yet, though I shouldn't think it will take much longer. Crazzy Kopite, and all others with similar specs (I'm one), it will run fine on PCs such as this, but unless you have cutting edge videocards, I wouldn't advise running it at a high resolution - 800x600 will be fine with high-ish detail on a computer such as Kopites.

I remember reading an article with one of the HL2 development team stating that RAM isn't of prime importance (ie. 512 will be fine), but your graphics card needs to be at least moderately recent. This will be the single most important factor to exploit the new gen games.

This is based on reading I've been doing, and is of course not a definitive answer.

So if I buy the very best graphics card which is £300 the 256MB Radeon X800 Pro my computer will play all games at maximum settings and good frame rates?
I would have thought that graphics card along with 2500 barton chip and 512 DDR ram would make my PC mid spec.

No one component can give ultimate performance. You have to match a cutting edge card with an equivalent processor/motherboard/ram etc.

    All compliment each other

What I was trying to say was that the graphics card is the single most important factor, not the only important factor. You will always be limited by your weakest link.

I would suggest if you did have an X800 Pro in a 2.5GHz CPU with 512 RAM you would have an above average spec, though of course the CPU would then become your weakest link. RAM upgrades (above 512MB) are apparently not that important is what I've read.

Btw, the X800 XT is the top of the range card, for £350, not the X800 Pro for £300.

Don't bother ordering from the states, its released on the 5th Aug in the states and the 6th over here. By the time its delivered most of us will have completed it, if you order from the states :D

Here's the full low down from Todd Hollenshead CEO of id:

FWIW...my local PC games shop has been taking preorders for Doom III for a few weeks now,and has just said that they don't expect release until the final quarter of 2004.

Any updates on that would be welcome.

Its on the BBC news website so I guess we will be playing Doom3 in august!

    touchwood!

An American firend of mine has pointed out that most games in the states seem to be on CD rather than dvd which is more of the norm over here in the UK. He is as a result plumping for the UK release

Know what version I'd rather have!
