Wonder if anyone can help with a few questions:

Is 6.1 just the insertion of an extra center rear speaker? And what does 6.1 actually do?

Is 6.1 really worth upgrading to and what benefits would I get? (is it just yet another upgrade in a long list of slightly unecessary upgrades?)

What is the difference between the different types of 6.1 formats I have been hearing about (discreate, ex and others I cant remember the names of??)

I have just ordered a new amp that will do 6.1 and just wanted to know if its worth yet more expense??

Sorry for the many questions but I guess thats how we all learn??

    Thanks all!!

Yes 6.1 is the addition of a rear centre speaker to give more accurate & enveloping sound field.

Dolby Digital EX the data for rear centre will be in the data stream of the Left Rear & Right Rear channels. This will be decoded with EX decoder to rear centre but if you only had a Dolby 5.1 decoder the data would be played back thru the rear Left & Right (the data would not be lost).

DTS-ES (matrix) will do similar as Dolby EX

DTS-ES (discrete) actually has seperate data for that rear centre channel as opposed to matrixed in the Rear Left & Right channels as it is with Dolby EX & DTS-ES matrix versions.

DTS-Neo 6 (music or movies) will take a stereo source & decode it to the 6 channels

Dolby Pro Logic II (music or movies) will take a stereo source & decode to the 5 channels

IMHO if you are buying a new amp then yes these are features I would want.

Thanks for the info! I can see I am going to have to look into 6.1 a bit more!

I have just bought a Pioneer VSX-2011. What would be the best setup to use?

Also can anyone tell me what 7.1 is? Is this just another speaker somewhere?

So how many hours till it gets delivered?!

7.1 is the addition of another centre rear making a stereo pair if i remember correctly.

I also have a 2011 and am currently running 5.1 with my front two biamped. Definitely makes a difference in my opinion.

Tip for you... If you do decide to Bi-amp then make sure you set it up in the menu before you run the wizard as the auto setup doesnt recognise this. You will need 4 into 4 cable with the main l+r plugged into the two rear speaker connection.

    Cheers,

    Hus

Gets delivered some time before 17:30 so there will be a little boy sat by the letter box all day!!

7.1?? Sounds like things are getting a little carried away, where will it end? There will be more speaker than front room soon!!

What is biamped? Dont know what it is but I bet I'll want it!

The 2011 has 7 internal amps built around mosfet if i remember correctly. So there is an option that allows you to use the 2 extra channels from the rear 2 (that i assume your not going to use yet!) to help run the fronts. You then have one set of amps running the highs and the other the lows. I found that it has a good effect on the overall sound.

Its the first option in the menu and you will need 4 into 4 biwire if your tempted.

    Did that help?

    Cheers,

    Hus

Just a minor note but I believe 7.1 is simply an additional rear center speaker running the same signal, so not stereo per se.

Yes from what I have heard 7.1 just uses the back centre signal and splits it so it is mono (much like Pro Logic I).

However I personally find it a bonus to get the extra separation and also makes it much easier to place the speakers. And that is not to say there won't be 7.1 stereo signals in the future.

I'm getting a 2011, I may bi-amp at first, but I think I will try 7.1 with some old speakers before I do. I was wondering though if the 2011 has any virtual processing effects of the 7 speakers? I mean things like having the rears as the effects speakers and the "middle" back speakers as a sort of inbetween to make the cross-over nicer. I'm not sure if I'm explaining myself vey well, but it seems to me that a receiver that can take a stereo signal and turn it into 5 channel sorround must be capable of doing some interesting splitting of the sound across a 7 speaker setup?

If you decide to biamp your left/right speakers (what make/model are they?) remove the bridging links on the speaker terminals- otherwise you'll blow up the amp.

Right I have just gone into town and purchased another VM1 so we are good to go for 6.1!! Well interested to see what it sounds like (especially with the new amp!!)

Can anyont tell me where I should be plugging the 6th speaker into? On the back of the amp there are sockets for 2 x surround back speakers left and right??

    Ta!

The Rear left and right (surround Back) signals are exactly the same so you can plug it into either.

Anyone considered putting two speakers on an amp with a single rear output? If they are 8 Ohm and you wire them in series you have 16 Ohm, still within the band for a lot of amps, well the ones I have owned anyway.

    Thanks for that m8!!

Have now set her up and so far am fairly impressed. I think I need to play with the settings a bit and still dont really know what the hell I'm doing but I'll get there!!

One thing though is that I cant really notice the new center rear doing anything?? I have run the auto setup and it has detected and set it up but doesnt appear to be doing much in movies?

Is there some kind of setting on the amp I have to have in order for it to kick in properly or for 6.1 to work?

Also I noticed that there is now a slight delay between the speach on the picture and the sound? Any ideas what that might be??

    Thanks guys!

I am pretty sure that when running 6.1 you have to plug the rear in the left rear channel. Its in the in manual i would make sure. That would explain the lack of sound.

You are of course experimenting with DTS-ES, and or DD EX discs, such as AOTC for DD EX, and Blade 2 for DTS-ES??..:D

So does 6.1 really only come into its own with certain disks and formats?

The surround back (or centre rear) will kick with dedicated 6.1 DVDs like Blade II. However you can also select a function call Surround Back On - which will use the surround back with 5.1 material, the results vary. So experiment with it. I tend to leave it on for most of the time.

    Ahhh another 2011 man!!

How do you turn this on and off? Am still playing with the menus so any advice on this and general setup would be appreciated!!

One thing is that when I did the auto setup it set all the speakers to large but all the advice I have had would suggest small???

Some things you just take for being a given.... :)

The seven special edition also has a dtses and ddex soundtrack i think. So does the LOTR 4 disk box set.

You really need to get some ES and/or EX movies........
    some examples below,

Discs containing DTS ES 6.1 English:-

    Austin Powers: Goldmember
    Blade II
Die Another Day: Special Edition (James Bond)
Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship Of The Ring Extended Version (4 Disc Set)

Discs containing Dolby Digital EX 5.1 English:-

Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secrets (Widescreen)
    Perfect Storm
Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace (2 Discs)
Star Wars: Episode II Attack Of The Clones (2 Discs)

Not sure about the 2011 but if you turn EX/ES mode on the Marantz it will output from the centre rear even if you do not have a 6.1 soundtrack, it will assume you have a matrixed soundtrack take a bit of surround left and right and stick it in the rear.

Have you tried the internal speaker test tones???

Don’t Forget Monsters Inc for an EX soundtrack.

I too have been thoroughly impressed by the reviews of this machine - I hope to get mine tomorrow or Thursday - 48 hours is way too long to wait next to the letter box though lol.

As for 6.1DTS ES discs have a look here: -

    http://hometheaterinfo.com/ex.htm

    Chicken run is amazing
    Gladiator knocks your socks off
Terminator 2 (EX this is not an ES disc like the others) always sounds brilliant but with 6.1 (or 7.1 - can't wait he he) it must sound unbelievable

    Hope this helps

Thanks for all the responses guys.

Am still playing with her at the moment so will post a response when I have delved a little further.

At the moment am not massivly impressed with 6.1 but will persevere and play around with the setup a bit more.

I got a Sound level meter recently, having previously set all levels by ear. Settings wern't too far out, but enough to make quite a differance when corrected!

I reccomend you buy or borrow one..:D
