Don't Look Up (Netflix) Movie Review & Comments

Is it though, given that we have leftist or hard-left governments in power all over ‘the West’ without exception, from Germany to Britain, from Australia to the US?.. Same with the media, though at least there remain a few exceptions here.
Left of who? Mussolini?

8/10 from me from yesterday's viewing and my 42 & 35 yr old daughters watched it with us and they liked it too. It also has some awesome bass moments in it too  .

yes I enjoyed it as well - so a 8/10 from me. Took me a while to recognise Cate Blanchett as the news anchor certainly different than Lady Galadriel. Takes a massive swipe at politics being reduced to simple slogans, wonder where we have heard those.

Before my wife and I watched this we had heard the synopsis on the BBC with Brian Cox and both agreed that there would only be one ending we would be happy with - so we'd give it a 7 simply because the ending didn't disappoint :D

Just watched it too, thought it was very good, 7.5/10

Watched it over the weekend with the wife and we both enjoyed it. Was a bit too long I think but overall pretty good watching. 7.5/10.

I loved it.

Great balance of drama, black comedy and satire... and very thought-provoking in the way it makes you wonder about what actually would happen if something like this arose in this age of self-obsessed "me me me" culture where huge issues are put aside because a Kardashian got a new implant.

A pure left government in everything but the name, yes. High taxes - check. ‘Big-gov’ approach to everything - check. Micro-managing everyone’s life - check. Eco-lunacy - check.
ahh, if that's your measure of being left, the Nazi party fits perfectly, you know that well known left party of the 1930's

And our famously left-wing news institutions such as The Sun, Telegraph, Mail, Express Times, Sky News, GB News etc.
It’s a socialist takeover!

You do know that ‘Nazi’ stands for National Socialism, and for a good reason, right? Right?..

I enjoyed it.
I was interested to see the review score for the movie and to compare it to my own score which is easily an 8.
I thought it was different from the usual storylines and it is a interesting take on modern politics and news media manipulation.

No way is this movie a 5. Definitely a solid 7 - 7.5/10 for me.

It was like Michael Moorer directed "Deep Impact / Armageddon meets The Social Network", with a Mars Attacks vibe.

Loved it.

I'm a fan of The Big Short, but thought this was a mess. Think it suffers from the 'too many stars' syndrome, and I can't help but think McKay had such a string of names eager to be in one of his movies that he bashed out a script in a weekend. Yeah, I get it, it's satirical and these superstars are playing exaggerated characters, but as a movie it just felt patched together from sketches. Sketches that aren't particularly funny. I agree with the original review.

5/10

Really rather enjoyed this (although I’m a sucker for anything that takes the Micky out of the anti vaxxer /climate change mindset).
Couple of things struck me, how much fun it was to see Meryl impersonating Trump after his cruel comments about her and also, whilst I couldn’t tell you a song she’s done how impressed I am with Ariana Grande, of course in real life having faced the Manchester atrocity but being able to send herself up in this film?

Good movie. 7/10 for me.

The message it tries to convey is pretty serious actually i.e. climate change etc (don’t think it’s covid so IMHO Tom you seem have got this wrong)

Also it kept reminding me of our own Brexit campaign haha

Watched 20mins and it was crap so flicked to the end.
You are not the only one. my wife and daughter had the same response. My son and his wife endured it .. I on the other hand enjoyed it greatly. Cleverly constructed ,and with a real message.

I suspect the Marmite nature of the film may be aligned with an individuals own beliefs and opinions. There is someone in this very thread, for example, who hated it who honestly and seemingly with a straight face believes the Conservative party is a far left wing political party. When your reality is that bent out of shape you can understand how this film might not appeal to all. To me it almost beggars belief how removed from reality some people are.

But while the subject of the film is of course about an asteroid the message it conveys applies to just about everything. Covid, climate change, for us Brits Brexit and so on. I guess many of us suffer from this collective apathy and blind faith that "those in power" are going to "do the right thing" and make sure we're not doomed to a fiery death. However I suspect many of us (me included) are just delusional. I've come to understand and realise a very many things over the past 2 years but the primary thing is the rich and the powerful do not care about me, or you, AT ALL. Not even for one second. We are just labour and their entire existence is dedicated to exploiting us (and the planet) to the absolute maximum they can to maximise their already huge slice of the pie. They do not care if we, or the planet, die doing it as long as they get richer.

I've never considered myself an anti-capitalist but the more I see and read the more rapidly I'm getting there.

A solid 7/10 for me

That’s a great post, but I suspect I say that as I’m on the same side of the marmite line as you! If nothing, the last few years are proven that we really can’t trust the political elite, who have been almost exclusively right-wing (by normally-accepted definitions!), libertarian capitalists. (And I’m not a loony-lefty, I consider myself to be fairly centrist). They care very little about the “little people”, who in turn either believe in the same things, or tacitly accept their abhorrent behaviour as they dislike the rampant commie opposition more, or are simply too distracted with banal nonsense to care. (I guess there’s a fourth option; those that see things as they are, but instead of doing anything about it, just sit on their backsides and whinge on Internet forums!).

The movie satirises this very well. It’s not subtle, but it can’t really be, as the past few years have been farcical anyway.
