    Hi All,

    Rented Donnie Darko (R2) today.

What a great film. Would go so far to say the best film I've seen this month ;)

However, it was spoiled by the fact that audio tracks available were either 2Ch film track or 2Ch commentary.

Does/has this film shipped with 5.1 in other regions ? Or is the retail copy for R2 going to have a 5.1 audio track ?

    Cheers

    Ian

The canadian version has DD 5.1 and it was very good, definitely worth the £7 I got it for.

Sometimes the UK version doesn't have extras, but they usually have have 5.1 sound.

i wouldn't get your hopes up for the retail release, although it will have different extras so will be a different pressing 5.1 may not be forthcoming as metrodome (the distributor) have annouonced that donnie darko will be the last dvd they release, then they're closing down.
the R1 has a 5.1 track, and there is a dts 5.1 release in france/belgium which is R2 and contains nearly all the extras from the excellent R1 SE

This seems very bad as this is one of those films where sound adds so much to the overall impact of the film.

There is sound in the film that benefits from coming from the rears. If you have seen the film you know what I mean..

Looking at the specs at Play, there appeared to be a couple of UK-exclusive extras on the R2. Shame if you have to compromise 5.1 for them though.

The dirt cheap R3 disc also only has a 2.0 surround audio track, I believe.

Prism have bought up all their catalogue, which should mean DD will eventually end up going for £5.99 in supermarkets, petrol stations etc same as all the rest of Metrodome's other stuff does now (Chopper, Shadow of the Vampire etc)

    I got it from Amazon.ca

It did take 4 weeks though, as it went surface mail (by ship) rather than by air mail (normally 4 days).

hi there, has anyone actually got the R2 edition of Donnie Darko with DTS (i think it is the Netherlands release) and if so is it much better than the 5.1 track?

i've got the R1 SE but i am slightly dissapointed with the quality of the 5.1 mix :( the levels seem a lot lower than a lot of my other disks which then brings in background fuzz (although maybe some of the background fuzz is part of the recording, it was only a low budget film i suppose) when you turn the volume up. all in all it is not a particularly crisp recording imo or maybe it is just spoilt a bit by the Dolby compression :nono: the rest of the disk is fantastic though  just got the cast and crew commentary track to listen to now and then i will be extra-ed out :zonked:

i am very tempted to get the DTS version as well for the much(hopefully) improved sound, slightly better PAL picture and it also has the alternative film poster for the DVD cover which i quite like :smashin: but then i might have to get the R2 UK release as well for the UK Art Exhibition exclusive extras as well!

needless to say Donnie Darko has quickly become one of my favourite films :p i got mine from Amazon.ca for 6-7 quid but it took a while to turn up. DVDSoon seem to be quite good too, i recently got the Stargate Ultimate Edition from them although they weren't especially quick either :boring:

    first off:

jdanielp you can get the dutch release from here:
    http://www.dvdzone2.com/dvd/detail.asp?id=122033
    no imposed subs
add 4€ or so to the 18.99€ for shipping.
someone at the dvddebate said that the DTS was better and so he sold his R1, but I haven't got the DutchR2 so no idea.

OK, just dropped the rental copy back in the shop and checked the display cases for Donnie Darko.

It does indeed say on the box 2 channel only.

Hope that doesn't mean the UK R2 is going to be the same.

    Cheers

Same here. One of the best atmospheric uses of surround I've ever come across. It would be totally lost on a two channel soundtrack.

Yeah - actually, the first time I saw this film was on a DVD backup with a 2Ch soundtrack and both DPLII and CSII pick up that "all-speaker" effect quite nicely. Wasn't perfect though - that shot looking down the road where the bicycle comes from behind you was all messed up.

On a side note, I just figured out a neat way to post spoilers...

So obvious to use the hex values, but you're the only one who thought of it - well done MuFu

Might be an idea to PM Garrett the code so he can add it to the spoiler etiquette sticky in Movies & TV :)

    Nice one :smashin:

Back on thread :D I didn't have a 5.1 setup when I watched Donnie Darko, so I'm now really looking forward to hearing it for those surround effects you mentioned :)

And there was me thinking he forgot to write something:blush:

The press reelase on the R2project doesn't mention anything for sound or picture:confused:

    erm found this:
    http://www.dvddebate.com/article.php?sid=3206&mode=&order=0&thold=0

so it was just the rental apperently.

watched it last night and spent 3/4 hr fiddling with my HTPC to get 5.1. Which of course didn't do squat apart from ruin the evening.

Looked quickly on the web and saw it was 5.1 and assumed it must have 5.1. Why on earth would it not be if the soundtrack is there? ****ty rental version is not 5.1, which I could have found out if I'd read this thread first.

Very good film nevertheless, but I have to be honest and say I found it hard to follow and need to watch it a few more times.
