As far as I'm aware, it's only the Sky+ boxes that are capable of doing this. I don't think the Sony will do it, even if it's optical port has been enabled.

    Could be wrong though!

(in simple terms) The DD5.1 signal is sent at the same time as the usual signal and the sky+ boxes allow you to choose which audio signal you want.

The Sony boxes, although they have the optical output, they do not the software option to choose the audio stream. So you will only get the standard audio which will be DPL at best.

Looks like I will never have DD as I will not pay £300 plus £10 a month for sky+.

Are any of the other companies planing to broadcast in DD?

Have you thought of buying a Sky+ box from Currys/Comet etc. and not signing up for the £10/month sub...hence getting the optical out and s-video, but just using it as a normal box?

Not sure if this will output DD5.1 or if it needs to be 'turned on' along with the other Sky+ features, but I think this is probably your best bet at the moment.
