I am currently looking for a new AV Receiver, I only have a limited budget. I am going to test drive a Harman Kardon AV4500 tomorrow which is an ex-dem bargain, the only thing it lacks is Dolby Digital EX - am I going to miss it? Are there many DVD's out there that have this format?

I am only planning (at this stage) to use a 5.1 speaker setup as I have a very small living room where the 2 rear effects speakers are either side of the sofa that's against the back wall.

You will not miss DD EX, for two reasons:

    1. Your rear speakers are not far apart.
    2. The vast majority of DVD's are plain 5.1 and sound best that way (IMHO) rather than being forced into EX.

I have a HK. It is excellent in all respects but particularly in stereo for music.

Hope the test drive goes OK.

    Many thanks for the response.

I'm glad the HK is good for music as that's really my first concern.

    smp,

I don't think you'll be missing a lot for DD EX sound format as your set-up is only 5.1 unless you have plans for setting up 7.1channels
