What’s the latest w.r.t. Dog Soldiers? Looking at related threads backing up to last summer, there’s plenty of chat about the quality of the audio and video on both R1 and R2, so I’m curious as to what the 17 Feb release offers.

Hopefully arriving in the morning tomorrow (Weds) so I'll be able to add something.

Probably not of design but I did notice the the 17th Feb, i.e. R2 release date was also a full moon. Arrrroooowww !

    Cheers

mine was posted on thursday so i would hope it's at home waiting for me now. think it was settled that grainy picture quality was down to the film stock used rather than the R1 mastering so R2 will be the same. commentary has been described as the funniest ever.

plasmattack - picked up a copy on Monday & watched it last night
    - like you have seen alot of chat about this & whilst most was positive there have been some negative comments ...
I only watch on a 32" WS so I dont profess to have the sort of kit that will highlight video problems - it looked fine to me with a proper WS picture etc
Audio wise I do have decent equip & was pleasantly suprised at the audio (bearing in mind this was a low budget Brit film) lots of use of surrounds & some real meaty (sic) explosions etc
Overall I thought the story was OK - lots of action & gore (I was suprised it was a 15 cert) I was expecting it to be a bit funnier -although there are some good one liners it is no Snatch
I had a quick listen to the Director / Actor commentary & that sounds like a real hoot
For me it is definately a "keeper" - 7/10
    Paul ;)

If you're thinking of buying Dog Soldiers try and hold out for a few days....... We are putting together a comparison review for this title! We will be comparing the R2, R1, R3 (DTS-ES, 4:3) and the Danish R2 which has extras and a DTS track....

    Stay tuned

tee - obviously your post was too late for me but I understand from another forum the Danish R2 doesnt have the Directors / Actors Commentary only the less good Producers one - no doubt you will confirm or deny this when you do your comparison ...
Maybe I should now buy the R3 with the DTS-ES sound & I have everything

Yeah, that's right, and because of that I wouldn't touch the R3, even though it's dirt cheap.

Well, I got my R2 yesterday and watched it last night.

Picture is a little grainy at times but otherwise a very good picture. But I view on a 28inch WS.

Audio is clear and steered quite well and the range is very good. Occasionally the levels for the larger explosions/effects isn't really there, but you wouldn't notice unless you were looking out for it.

Listened to a bit of the comm. by the actors and that seems to be very funny, well the bits I listened to anyway. (I'm sure some of them were a bit pi**ed when they did it)

Combat, the short film also on the disc is also very entertaining/very clever.

Overall, great package, especially as I really enjoy the film anyway.

    Cheers

Thought the sound track on Dog Soliders was very good considering it was a fairly low budget film.
I remember listening to it in the cinema and there are 2 scenes which retain there power on the DVD.

One is when they are attacked in the Land Rover, that screeching sound from the claws on the roof. Really worked well.
The other was in the house when one of the Weresolves it trying to force a door open. (I know this happens fairly frequently but you'll know the bit I mean)
Again great rear sound effects. It really sounded like my Sub was behind making the thumping noise when it was really down the front of my room.

Not sure if the DTS track would be much better.
Have to say the actors/director commentary was good fun as well.

    Cheers

I know the bit you mean about the doors being kicked. Talk about being there

I agree that a DTS treatment isn't going to improve this film much.

    Cheers

Its not that I "want" pan & scan but am I the only one who thinks that the sound is as important (IMHO more important) as the picture on a DVD ?
If I only bought widescreen DVDS I would not own most of the music titles I have (40+) as most are "foolscreen"
It'd real nice for Dog Soldiers to have a "definative" version which has the DTS-ES / DD5.1 / all the extras & all the commentaries but as yet that version has not materialised (maybe there's an SE planned once we've all bought the initial release - sarcasm overload sorry ...)

I've just watched the DTS Danish version and it rocks!!!!

One of the best and funniest films I've seen in quite some time!!!
Far funnier than the Four Weddings and About a Boy crap that's been touted in the past as the best British comedies and it wasn't even meant to be a comedy!!!

    Some fantastic one-liners!!! :D

There’s now way it wasn't funny intentionally. Unless some people are funny in the head.
