Could be Full screen though as it doesnt say widescreen/ letterbox on the description.
I'll stick with getting the R2 But let us know what the disc is like when you get it

dddhouse are superb i have used them for ages for all my HK dvds - had around 40 odd dvds from them. Nice and cheap with very good delivery times. If you do order any dvds make sure you keep the total under £18 so customs wont charge you - I order 3 discs per order and have never had any charges. All the dvds they sell are official HK releases.

they are fantastic and their customer service is great but watch whether the titles are w/s or fullscreen. I order from them in threes as well... weird!

cdwow & dddhouse both list this as DTS only so does that mean there is no DD (5.1 or 2.0) audio on the R3 ? Is there somewhere else that might list more details or even review the R3 disc ?
    TIA - Paul ;)

dddhouse dont have a currency convertor but i'm sure someone here will post one for you. I just use a rough guide
of $10 HK = £1 UK (i think the exchange rate is about $11.5 HK but that does me as a rough guide)
dddhouse do charge P+P its $70 HK for 3 dvds

I can't believe people are even considering buying this just because it has DTS. The transfer is 4:3 for crying out loud! Same as the one at cd-wow.

I'm with you on this SG. Proof, if proof were needed, that DTS bores do indeed prefer the sound over the visuals of a dvd. Don't you lot get it? The disc is in DTS and 4:3, thats why it's only six bloody quid!

Many people now have equipment to decode DTS 6.1, but there is still very little software available in this format. People naturally want to enjoy their equipment to the full and are tempted to buy stuff they would maybe not normally consider.

Why dont you just buy both the R1(ntsc) + R3(ntsc), then using 2 dvd players have the R1 connected to your screen so you can
watch a lovely Widescreen picture and have the R3 in the other player connected to your DTS 6.1 Amp - You can then watch it in DTS and widescreen. - might take you a bit of practice to get them
running at the same time so theres no lag on the sound and you cant do it with the R2 as thats PAL and the sound would be out.

Has the special edition been released yet? And how do you know which is which, does it actually have a S.E. label?

The reason it's only "six bloody quid" is because it's from Hong Kong - the currency is worthless (or at least has a very low exchange rate against the £), the product quality control isn't as high as US or European suppliers would (generally) insist on, and they have a more realistic pricing structure for DVDs over there. Over in "the East" they release a lot more films with DTS as standard, probably 70-80% of R3 releases of western films, certainly modern ones, have dual DD and DTS audio streams. They aren't always anamorphic though.

In the case of Dog Soldiers, it was filmed in 16mm and later blown up to 35mm for distribution, so it's possible that the 4:3 transfer will actually show the full frame, rather than being matted to 1.85:1, although having not seen it to compare with my widescreen R1 I wouldn't want to say that's the case, they could just as easily have cropped a 35mm blown up print, and I'm certainly not anally retentive enough to find out even if it is only £6.99. I can understand those that might want to though, after all it's less than the price of a decent bottle of wine.
