I'm looking for a dvd recorder with the following - my question is, does it exist yet?

    • Divx playback
    • tv tuner
    • ethernet or wireless port
    • no HDD (I have a SKY+ box for that)
    • pref +/- support
    • xvid playback

I was looking at the KISS website but couldn't see a recorder with tv tuner and DIVx support. Any ideas?

For wide types of media playback your better off with a seperate DVD recorder and DVD player. May I suggest you take a look at this site.

In particular it is worth noting that a HDD/DVDR combi is the ideal companion for Sky+. The beauty of such a setup is that Sky+ offers the perfect timeshifter whilst the HDD/DVDR combi allows you to make editted recordings that play on other DVD players. Most users here have both.

Thanks for the reply - my DVD player at the moment is a DivX compatible machine. My thought process was that by foregoing the HDD a DVD recorder would be a bit cheaper.

On another note - how does the ethernet link work? Can you browse the network through the DVD recorder (and tele) and thence play anything? If there are .avi file on the PC do you need the DivX decoder in the recorder or does the PC do it?

    Thanks again!

Depends on the model. On 'grey' models such as KISS I am not sure - I don't investigate that area of the market too intensively as such machines are generally fairly poor DVD recorders in themselves. On the Panasonic E500 it's uses are quite restricted: you can view MPEG2, MPEG4 or JPEGs on your machines HDD on a PC (or another E500) and you can title programmes. Unfortunately there is currently no online TV Guide - a missed opportunity if ever there was one - and you can transfer video to your PC for editting (no FTP). But I'm sure KISS have a more flexible implementation.

    Nick,

I think it probably is - I am trying to work out the difference between that and the 1504/8. They are all available here in France, saw them in Boulanger today...

    KiSS DP-558 can record, DP-1504/08 can't.

The harddrive in 15xx is only for storage (DivX movies and music).
