I'm getting confused by the variety of PVRs, DVD recorders and Freeview boxes out there and the fact that each seems to only have some of the features I'm looking for. So, does anyone know if I can buy the following in a one box solution anywhere:

    - Twin Freeview recorders (record one channel and watch another)
    - Large HDD or upgradeable HDD
    - Ability to archive to DVD

Doesn't seem like too much to ask, but I haven't yet found the product that will do it. Can anyone help? Thanks.

The Topfield TF5800 should be able to do all that you ask.

    More info here: Toppy.org.uk

Thanks. I've had a look but AFAICS it doesn't include DVD burning?

No DVD burning on the toppy but you can transfer file to PC and burn DVD there. IMO this is better since the software on PC gives you more control, the ability to create menus, chapters, etc. I have my toppy networked.

You didn't say that you wanted to archive to dvd on the unit itself. If this is the case then no such unit exists at the moment, although you could build an htpc to do the job but they have their limitations.

As Bearded Malc says recorded programs can easily be transferred from the toppy to a pc for archiving.

Ok, cool. Hadn't realised that was a possibility.

Are there other units which may be similarly networked and used to transfer recorded files to the PC?

A UK version of the Siemens M740 AV has a rumoured release later this year, USB hard drive support and wired/wireless networking. The European versions don't do radio or MHEG5 but apparently do work for TV here.

That would be handy. Personally I'm amazed there isn't a one box solution out there with twin freeview, HDD and DVD burning. It would seem to be a combination of features that would satisfy most users' requirements.

C'mon manufacturers, pull your fingers out!
