This is an amazing system for that price.

Doesn't come with a monitor though and could do with doubling the memory but this is cheap at the moment anyway.

If I was looking for a new PC I would definitely buy this one.

Based on the spec and current trade component prices it is pretty much a cost price system and reflects the margins available in this area of the market. The CPU alone accounts for the majority of the system cost (~£200) although I presume they got a pretty big discount from Intel!.

The problem with this type of offer is that you inevitably end up with bits you don't need or are a compromise on what you really want. A P4 2.66 is probably overkill for a typical HCPC anyway - it depends on what you're looking to use your HCPC for.

    Cheers, Phil

Hi greg and phil, thanks for the replies.

Mainly the PC will be used as follows:

    DVD, DIVX, SVCD, VCD
    CD, MP3
    BROADBAND INTERNET: Explorer, P2P
    PVR
Future install DTT or SATELLITE TV tuner card/software decryption
Some GAMING (How good would it be?)

It will be the only computer system in the house. The spec looks quiet and users have said it is quiet.

It will need to run TWO monitors (one plasma downstairs and one TFT upstairs)

It will be linked to a DD/DTS RECEIVER on two seperate links (one 5.1 speaker set downstairs, one stereo car speakers embedded in wardrobes upstairs)

All the wiring is in place and I will be ready to rock and roll in a few weeks.

I was going to build a system but then I heard about this. I might replace the case but that will be cheap and not a necessity. Will also upgrade to DVDR in 12 months.

One minus is I have just bought WinXP and OfficeXP already and will get MediCenter when released at a very cheap price (genuine retail boxed from Microsoft) so will be paying twice for that.

PLEASE Let me know what you think by posting or polling - big thanks, its my first computer nevermind HCPC so pretty please advise guys!

This is a very very good price. I'm in the trade and could not purchase all these components for this price.
They are offereing a 19" monitor for just over a hundred quid also

What are the motherboard and PSU? (both very important in a HTPC)

A mate of mind uses his for HTPC, its ideal as the powersupply is noise damped. Although the graphics card being an Nvidia ain't quite up to the radeon, and doesn't support gamma adjustment.

Other than that I would buy one, if I didn't already have my own PC.

Motherboard is a SIS based board, which I initially though "oh no", but its proved reliable enough. (I also used this computer for office work as well.)

I don't think Aldi are going to be offering this on the 9th. I called them up and they said they had no plans to offer such a product and that the pre xmas sale was a one-off.

I also called Medion who confirmed this.

    Cheers,

    Phil

How did you call them up? They dont have any phone numbers except for a store locator service who wont discuss products!

    You might be right though!

A guy on the DVD forums said he bought one of these on the 6th Jan! I called Aldi again and they said that they would be offering it from the 9th. I am confused but will head into my not so local Aldi tomorrow to find out.

but maybe they still have one reserved for me if you are lucky. get down there and ask if they have one in the back. they were saving it for me but only for a week so it *may* still be there or may have been sold to someone else.

get down to new cross/old kent rd aldi to find out
