I have just bought the Toshiba D-R1 DVD player, it plays dvd-ram discs and dvd-r discs perfectly, but I cannot record using dvd-rw discs. Can anyone recommend a brand of dvd-rw disc that records.

What brand are you currently trying? This machine should do all the formats you listed.

I have used "datasafe" 2xspeed dvd-rw discs, I have no problem recording with the dvd-r discs, but I cannot record with the dvd-rw discs for some strange reason

The DR1 is very fussy with DVD-RW media: try some good quality, branded disks. Scrathproof TDK seem quite popular on the DVD Recorders forum.
