The other week I was using the expanding the picture to Cine mode as it was zooming out I noticed at the side of the picture, more that was in it in the 4:3 or pan mode. To try this just set the set to Pan and pause a tape or DVD just as a object disappears of the side of the screen, then open up to cine and the object reappears.
The question is why can’t I see it in 4:3 or Pan mode if the object is being transmitted?

Hmm, that's odd considering the Pan mode doesn't actually go right to the edges of the screen!

I'll be trying it out on my Xelos tonight...

yes, I did. Couldn't really see anything missing. In fact, since the Cine mode fills the screen and overscans just a little you can see slightly less in that compared to the Pan mode. It's not much of a difference though.

This may be different for this TV, but... On my JVC you can change the size of the black bars at the sides of a 4:3 picture in the service settings, I'm able to display either a full 4:3 pic or remove some of the picture at either side, this would produce the effect you are seeing. I dont know if this is any help or if it can be altered on the Loewe.

Simbloke can you try and have a quick look whilst going from 4:3 to 16:9, this show it whilst it is expanding but not after it has expanded.

Andrew_arkless do you know what it is called in the service settings.

    Garrett,

On the JVC these settings are named H-BLK-R & H-BLK-L , I assume that this means horizontal blanking left & right, they act like curtiains closing on the 4:3 & 14:9 screens, they cannot be changed in other i.e. full screen modes.

Can’t see it on mine, one thing I was wondering some time when I put a old recording in my new video machine I can see a white spiky bar down the RH side( like a sound track) is this what the blanking is used for?
