Does such a cable exist?

Have just bought a new Yamaha AV to replace an ageing Sony all-in-one (DVAS800) but have come across a problem with connecting the old sub-woofer to my new amp.

The Sony sub-woofer uses speaker cables (black/ red connections like the standard speaker connections on the AV - not sure if there is a technical term for these) but the sub-woofer socket on the AV is a phono output. So, is it possible to get speaker cable to phono cables, or some kind of convertor? If not, I guess it's a new sub too :( unless anyone has any further suggestions...

New sub I'm afraid. Your old sony subwoofer is passive, it has no built in amplifier. The phono connection on the back of your amp is low level so you need an active subwoofer.

Thanks for the *ahem* 'good' news - at least I won't spend any more time looking for the cable ;)
